I think some people will always be disturbed by anyone different from them, but I think they are generally older people and they are a minority of the population.
My husband just got back from a motorcycle trip to the Traverse City Area. He and his friends we're eating breakfast and this little, old couple just wouldn't stop staring and whispering. While my husband may look like a biker with all his gear, he is actually rather sensitive and quickly became irritated by all the stares. On top of which, everywhere they went people would glare at them. He says he's glad he went, but next time they will go somewhere that is more "biker friendly".

Speak Ojibwa or get out of our country with your silly immigrant tongues, you unpatriotic buffoon!!!
Yeah... most people who yell about "speak English" don't realize that the United States does not have an official language. There's no requirement except social pressure to conform to any language. If everybody started speaking Mandarin or Spanish, the government would have to comply to their choice to speak those languages. I guess that's what the freedom is that's hidden behind all that flag waving. It's not just freedom to think like everybody else.
This line of thinking is similar to people who think we live in a Christian nation just because most people are Christian.

I went to high school with a biracial female(black mother, white father) who was from the UP of Michigan(the Soo specifically). She appeared to like her home town.

To the original poster, as others have said, anywhere you go there will be some intolerant idiot. Whether or not you should stumble across them on your vacation is anyone's guess, but I wouldn't let that stop me. Don't let the narrow minded control your life, otherwise all you're doing is buying into the fear they're trying to place upon you.
I've lived in the Marquette area for the better part of the past decade and I haven't seen any racism first hand here or in other parts of the U.P. I've visited and people I've encountered.

I don't believe you will have a single problem in the up. Do go to Ontonagon MI my family home town. It is near the Porcupine mountains and beautiful. It is so pretty and a wonderful place to visit. It is so wonderful and Marquette is nice too. Go on the picture rock cruise in Munising. While in the minority you will not be the only mixed race couple around. So Say Ya to da UP to ah. Have a fun trip, eat a pasty, get some ternary toast, eat some lake trout, and don't think anything of it when your called a troll. It's not a racist thing it's cause we all live under the bridge. I am bi-racial (Black and Japanese) and my husband is White. He is from Michigan (35 Years) but we now live in Las Vegas, NV. We visit Michigan every year and really enjoy the U.P. I have met one of the nicest people in the U.P. I have never experienced any stares or racial tension during my visits. We've gone to smaller towns and the people there seem to enjoy seeing visitors and telling us where to visit, etc. It's one of my best vacations ever.

I'm sure you'll be fine in the UP. Maybe I'm blind but there isn't as much racism as people seem to think.

I haven't been to the UP. I might try it. And no I will not let race be the factor in it. If I get the chance I will go up there(in winter hopefully).
