"we're a beautiful couple"...sounds a little conceited...
If there is anything I know people don't like worldwide, it's visitors full of themselves.
I am planning on moving to northwest michigan and it didn't cross my mind to ask if people will LIKE my skin colour...matter of fact i forgot to ask about the racial thing until i remembered i need to find somewhere to do my hair, and it turned out detroit isn't that easy to hop on a bus and get to, so then i had to ask how the town is as far as a place to do my hair.
If I am going somewhere on vacation, it's a bad sign of where my mind is if my main concern is not what are the attractions that i must not miss, but how many people won't like me or what are my chances of people not liking me because of xyz national problem...
If you look unusual and people look, it's...because you look unusual...I saw someone here post that they ar black and japanese...i don't see that mix too often, so i would likely look a little longer out of interest...I have a mixed daughter that people stare at and compliment all the time...I don't get annoyed or think they stare because they DISAPPROVE...some might, but many just like how she looks and her curls. I think sometimes she might get a big head if she constantly hears how beautiful she is before she even learn to speak, but if God saw fit to give her that appeal, so be it.
Just my two cents, be careful of your subconscious attitude. Confidence is good, but don't go overboard. I do see that you had a terrible experience with the area...but you know what they say about fears...you have to face them down...if for no other reason than to not be afraid to go home, you should definitely go take your vacation and show your family your childhood home. If something comes up, then explain it to your children in terms they can understand that tell the truth without making it seem like the end of the world...you don't want your children to grow up defensive. Aware and cautious, but open to that good side n people that tends to come out when you give a nice smile and say "hi."

I do not think you will have any problem. The UP is not a real racist place. Now in some of the southern states you would have to look out. Some places away from larger cities are very nasty still. Bigger cities are fair in all the states. But outside in that "real American" Palin talked about Bubba and Billy Bob are still around waving the Confederate Battle flag and would just as soon shoot a biracial couple as look at them. I looked at moving to Harrison Arkansas, it is close to Branson and has beautiful vistas, but I was told they had to take the sign down but it was still a sun down law in effect. For those who do not know what that is, some towns in the south had signs that said "****** do not let the sun sit on your black ass" I walked into a antique store in Harrison and got an ear full on how we as a nation need to kill all the gays or as was said "fags" and cut the hands off of anyone who steals, and put the ten commandments back in school. I was glad to see how much more reasonable the Christians were than the Muslims we were fighting in Iraq.

Believe it or not, many places in Michigan had sundown laws too. TRhey aren't enforceable now, but it did happen.

What is that? (Pardon my ignorance but they don't seem to cover that in US history, and I am from another country.)

Sundown towns were places that had laws stating that people of a certain race or ethnicity mainly blacks, could not live in that town. They could work there in the day, but at sundown(hence the name "sundown laws") they had to be gone or the police would chase them out. Those laws are no longer enforceable for the most part.
As for traveling to the UP of Michigan, I would not give it a second thought. If you want to travel there, don't let anything stop you.

oooohhhh wow. I think i had read of curfews where slaves couldn't be out at night...but not where free people had to be gone OUT OF TOWN...
No longer enforceable? More to the point why have they not been removed from the books since they clearly contradict the constitutional amendments?
Seems to me Obama could create a whole SLEW of jobs in every state paying people to air ALL the cobwebs out of antiquated laws for biases and machines and activities that no longer exist or are no longer allowed...
The south especially has some weird laws even just between a white man and woman that need to be erased with a big fat heavy duty eraser.

You can either live in fear your whole life and not do anything fun or you can conquer your fears.
ON a side note, I'm white and don't feel comfortable in bars up there. You might want to be careful when sampling the night life.

Slavery ended in 1865. The sundown laws didn't come until at least 1890. The laws lasted until the 1960's and 70's. Some places in the USA didn't get rid of them until the 1980's. Some places still might have them in the books but according to the Constitution you can't enforce them(that and /or they are ignored).
Up until the 1960's, blacks were not allowed to intermarry with whites. In some places in the South, a black man could be killed just for staring at a white woman too long. Look up Emmett Till.
As for the UP of Michigan, I don't recall much of a history of violence, so I wouldn't worry about traveling there.

True, be careful, but we can't always live in fear.

You cannot help what your family is, you can only help yourself. Life is short michigantrav. Don't spend time on the insignificant stuff, spend time on the Soo Locks and Taquamonen Falls. Oh, by the way, don't worry about your son. People in the UP are as friendly as they come. Take care and good luck.......
