Michigan should go to a part time legislature. That would save a bundle.

I think we should pay them more. Maybe then we'd get successful business people to take a few years off to serve, rather than the bunch of losers and misfits we have now who get into politics for the money and their egos because they've never head a real successful career their entire lives. I know a lot of great people who'd love to serve in Lansing, but they frankly can't afford the pay cut. Maybe more good people could afford a few months off to serve if it was not a full-time commitment.
I wonder though, if this drive will lead to the kind of unanticipated negative consequences that term limits gave us, such as lobbyists and staffers running Lansing since no one in the legislature is there long enough to really learn how to get anything done. I guess I'm leaning toward part-time, but with no term limits.

haha
Pay them more? The money is with the lobbyists who truely control the government from behind the scenes. Only those who have the interest of the people are the ones interested in low pay. If you pay them more, you will only find more corruption and carelessness.

Your poll is absurdly biased toward your pre-determined opinion.
How much are State Representatives currently paid?

Do you have any specific recommendations? Petititions to sign, demonstrations to show up for? This is one time I think writing my elected official is likely to fall flat.

Lessee...
There's currently 38 Michigan State Senators and currently 110 Michigan State Representatives. Howabout we eliminate the State Senate and cut the number of State Representatives in half, to 55?
And the pay-cut proposal being floated for the ballot in November? It covers a LOT MORE than pay cuts to the governor, senators, and representatives. Read more about it here:

In the Freep article it stated they make $79,000 I was under the impression they were the third highest paid in the Nation at $95,000 plus all their benefits. why is it that people who serve the People can't work for $25,000 a year like most folks in this State. with all the lay offs and buy outs why is it these MORONS reap the benefits when allot of folks are losing everything where are these people's safety net, But the people in Lansing could give a rats butt what happen to the WORKING PEOPLE of the State of Michigan. I would say CUT THEIR PAY, and see who well they do. The rest of us are doing it just so we can get by day to day. But like they say MONEY TALKS and BS WALKS.

Well, that's very "rah rah working man" of you, but the reality is that government has to compete with upper management positions. If you pay people $25,000, which is far less than most working people make that I know (union folk make more than college graduates!), you're going to lose people qualified to make upper level decisions because they can't afford it.

Wow, I didn't know that the State Reps are overpaid morons who don't care about their constituents!
Maybe we need to draft people like Frankawitz to run for public office?
