Exactly. As breathtakingly beautiful as Lake Michigan is, it's pretty much a small cold ocean. It's difficult to boat it unless you have something longer than 30'. You can barely water ski on it. Jet skiing can be rough. And it even has cold undercurrents up near the shore in hot summer months, dropping the water temp to the 50's.
If I had my drothers, I'd take an inland cottage on a sandy lake over a Lake Michigan cottage any day (if money were not an issue )

We lived in Spring Lake for a year and absolutely loved it! Spring Lake is a large, meandering lake that adjoins Lake Michigan. If you lived anywhere in Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, or Fruitport you would be within walking or biking distance of both lakes. There is a wonderful bike trail that goes all around Spring Lake and thru these towns. There are definitely some affordable houses that can be had in these areas and it is all within 30 - 45 minutes of Grand Rapids. Also close to Muskegon where there is every kind of shopping and bigger city convenience.

Hastings or Cloverdale might work for you.

Right now, because of the long foreclosure lists, you can pick up practically anything -- even a nice place on a lake -- for a song. Go to it; I hope you find just the right place for you.
EDIT: One specific place to look is the funny little region in Livingston/Washtenaw called "Lakeland." It's literally just a mass of lakes with houses around them, a stone's throw from I-96, which gets you to Lansing in half an hour.

I think you are putting way to much money on the table. You should be able to get that for half. If you wait till fall maybe 1/4.
