News, Michigan's governor bikes to work — could you do the same?
Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm said Wednesday that she bicycles to work a couple of times a week. How many of us could do the same?
Granted, Granholm's three-mile commute isn't exactly a grueling workout. But most of us make plenty of short trips - to the dry cleaners, or the local supermarket/convenience store, or the movie rental place - that we could probably reach easily on a bike. Or walk to, for that matter.

Agree with her or not on other things, she's setting a good example. This is a good habit that we are seeing more & more Nationally. I was recently in Denver, and was amazed at the difference in attitude compared to Michigan. There is a massive focus on walking/biking/light-rail/buses as alternatives to driving, and a very "green" attitude there in general.

I think this is an excellent example of someone practicing what they preach. I see tons of people bicycling here in Grand Rapids.. day AND night. It's a fairly efficient way to travel short distances in most weather, and it sure saves on gas.. not to mention keeps people in shape.

Well I have to wonder if she wears a wig or some disguise based on her popularity at the present time.

As much as I need the workout I highly doubt I could bike to work , it's 28 miles one way. Not to mention there is no good route.

I think the future really is homes and work all moving closer together.. these high gas prices are not sustainable for the lifestyle we currently live.. that's obvious. there already are model communities like this in California.. where little urban "towns"
have been built up. They have a central business district with shopping/city center/city square, and houses all around. It's kind of like suburbs, but with much more charm and character.
I hate commuting myself. If you calculate how much time is spent just driving to and from work (for those who drive really far) you'll realize just how many man-hours could be saved if those distances could be shortened.
And that's another reason I love GR. Commuting intra-city is NOT a nightmare.

big changes need to take place. right now, many motorist get pissed off when you ride a bike in the road (how dare you slow me down). michigan is full of fat lard azzes who are lazy and never have exercised and never will.
I so hope for super high gas prices, as its the only thing that will change our shyty habits. I love how when gas was cheap people said "no, no drilling off our coast and in alaska!!" now that its affecting peoples wallets they now say "Drill fu-kin everywhere!!! build nucular reactors!!!"
Personally I could care less what they build or drill, but I think the majority of not just michigan but our nation is a bunch of greedy slobs that only care about things when it hits the pocket book.
Riding bikes to work? I do it sometimes.. 34miles round trip.
