I like the idea of Northern Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin, and the U.P. being one state. Superior would be a good name as someone else mentioned.

The SE water shortage, I know states like GA and NC are seeing huge amounts of people flocking in but I don't think there situation is as bad as the SW water problem.

I do hope that someday Michigans economy comes back and that is a thriving growing state. You guys have a lot of natural beauty in your state that your neighboring states envy you for.

There is a legend that in the land deal with the French, someone thought there were 2 large islands north of Copper Harbor and gave Michigan "The first island north". Turns out there's just 1 island and all of a sudden Isle Royale is part of MIchigan. I'm not sure if that's true, but it's amusing.
Back in 1783, an American delegation led by Ben Franklin was in Paris, negotiating with the British for an end to the war. One of the items to resovle was the location of the border between the United States and British America (eventually, Canada). The map being used to draw the border was the Mitchell map of North America, created by John Mitchell in 1750. This map showed numerous islands in Lake Superior, the largest being Isle Royal, Isle Phelipeaux, and Isle Ponchartrain.

Franklin proposed drawing the boundary so that the United States owned Isle Royal and all islands to the immediate south, including Isle Phelipeaux, and Britain owned Isle Ponchartrain, all of the small islands north of Isle Royal, and nearly all of the small islands in the eastern half of Lake Superior. The British accepted this proposal.

Unfortunately for the British, Isle most of their islands, including Isle Ponchartrain, didn't exist!

While the United States did receive the non-existent Isle Phelipeaux, it also obtained the actual Isle Royal.

silly special interest posters... try to force their political issue in any way they can.

Anyway - I think the U.P. rightfully belongs to Michigan for one reason: the Great Lakes. The L.P. and U.P. are joined by the fact that they are both surrounded by massive bodies of water. Both share maritime cultures that built up amidst these bodies of water.

I know Wisconsin's got part of Lake Michigan and a kernal of Superior, but it doesn't really define the state. I never think of majestic dunes and beaches and forests and big blue water when I think of Wisconsin the way I do Michigan - both L.P. and U.P.

I guess I'm just saying it all makes for a nice, cohesive package of inland coastal culture the way it is. I think of blue when I think Michigan. I don't know what color I think of when I think Wisconsin, but it's not a very popular one in the Crayola box.

This has been an interesting thread. You Michigan folks are die-hard. I too think the U.P. belongs to Michigan it is unique.

To the person who said something about CPL license? What is that exactly?

I'd go with the Macaroni 'n' Cheese color. After all they are known for their cheese there! (Though California thinks otherwise). Just kidding. Wisconsin has its own beauty as well.

As for Michigan I think every color of blue for the lakes, the deep blues of the St. Clair River and southern Lake Huron specifically, the greens and browns of the northern forests, the sandy whites of the beaches, and the purples, reds, and oranges of a Straits sunset.

Have you ever heard the joke about the Irish family where the kids fight like cats and dogs until a stranger takes a poke at one of them? Pretty much describes Michiganders, too. We are a state divided by Yoopers and Trolls (those who live "below" THE bridge), Detroiters and out-staters, devotees of the sunrise side and the sunset crowd, but just let some outsider threaten our Winter Water Wonderland and even the streets of Ulster look tame by comparison.

Your to funny MICoastieMom! My english teacher was a Yooper. He was one of my fave teachers because he always had stories of growing up in the U.P. His mom still resides up there on a lake in a small town the name starts with an H. I can't think of the name. All I can say is the UP sounds like the place to experience your childhood.
