Post News, Mich. cities say hundreds of manhole covers stolen.

FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Officials in Flint, Mich., say they've had to replace hundreds of manhole covers and grates that were probably stolen and sold for scrap.

The Flint Journal reported Monday that nearly 400 cast iron covers and grates have been taken from streets in the past year. A cover can fetch $20 from a scrap yard but can cost the city more than $200 to replace.

the whole scrap selling thing has gotten out of hand here in philly-manhole covers as well as rain gutters on churches as well as tombs in cemetaries-the doors made out of metal- the stupid scrap yards that buy the stuff need a lesson on what to accept and what not to accept!!!!

The police should be cracking down on the scrap-yards.
If a guy walks in with a manhole cover and tries to sell it, you can pretty much guess it's stolen.

I agree. When they stop accepting man hole covers and stolen transformers, maybe people will stop stealing them.

I heard on the news last night that a kids football team in Detroit had the transformers for their field (and bathrooms) stolen creating a hardship for them. Who would accept copper from a transformer? Wouldn't it be contaminated with PCB's?

Someone needs to start watching the scrap yards to see what they're taking and start fining them, heavily, for accepting stolen property.

I have heard scrap-yard owners claiming the stolen goods are hidden in bigger loads of legit scrap.

I'm not buying that.

they need strict liability laws. You take stolen scrap, you go to jail, or at least pay a hefty fine. Make the scrap dealers responsible for sorting through the loads for stolen materials. They really need to crack down. Some idiots have been killed trying to steal live electrical wires.
