Default Gaylord,Alpena or Houghton Lake?

We are relocating to Northern michigan from Flint and can choose any of the 3 areas.I'm starting the research on schools and property taxes.I would really appreciate any input on any reason to pick one over the others.I've lived in southeastern MI my whole life and I know everywhere is beautiful up north. Why would you pick your city over the others? Thanks

I don't feel qualified to make a recommendation as I have spent very little time in Houghton Lake, think I have been there twice for meetings. If you like to fish, I guess it is a good place to be since there is a lot of ice fishing there. Gaylord has lots of interesting little shops, it is more tourist oriented. I prefer Alpena, quieter.

I'm partial to Alpena too, as it's not so busy as the other towns. HL is nice but it's full of "weekenders" during the summertime. The lakes around town get super busy. Gaylord gets the same way.

It seems like it would be a great time to purchase a home upstate, as many folks are choosing to unload their vacation properties. Not good for them, but good for you.
