The teen years can be rough anywhere
I grew up in Flint and spent my teen years in the 60s. Even in a city of that size, when it was prospering, it seemed like there wasn't much to do that wasn't connected with the schools.
It also seemed like one of the main pastimes for those old enough to do so was hitting the bars. Unless we could find a place to get served underage, that put even more of a void in those years between graduation from high school and becoming legal to drink. Fortunately, college and all of the activities associated with it, kept me fairly busy.
I took up golf, but in Michigan that's good for a few months, at best. Bowled a bit in the winter months.
So, while there may be even less to do in a small town, living in a fairly large city isn't necessarily much better. That, and the lack of a wide variety of jobs, is the primary reason that young people can't wait to leave the small town. As we get older, some of us see the light, though.
