roxyh - You're the first person I've ever heard call Grand Rapids a small city!!

But yes, as everyone else has said if you seek things normally associated with the fast paced life, the lower peninsula is for you. If you love nature and a slower pace of life (but still within reach of some of the "fast paced life") then the upper peninsula is for you.
Maybe I should have said a smaller city. Growing up here, being a teenager here, and a young adult here, there isn't much to offer as much as entertainment or other things to do. In winter there is absolutely nothing to do. I just know a lot of people my age who would perfer a bigger city than what we have here.

I just had to pick my jaw up off the floor!! After graduating and spending a year or so in Denver I moved to Grand Rapids. Lived there until after I married and we decided to have kids. I have never lacked for something to do, explore, or see.
I'm only 32, we just moved away from there five years ago (both of our families still live in the area).
You need to make some better connections within the greater metro area. There's plenty to discover

I chose to retire in the UP , cause I tried Florida , have been to AZ.also , and , most everywhere else in the US and Canada. Those retirement places are not for me, too many old people....... The UP has what I am looking for, have been coming here for 35 years, now , I am back , to live full time , build a home , and not have to think about that long drive back south. At todays fuel prices , I think I might not be able to ether. Stuck in the UP.... yes....there are worse places !

Us Yoopers are vastly different from the Trolls (Michiganders who live below the bridge). We are not as materialistic as a lot of LP areas. The land prices and home prices here are much less. And if you are soon to retire or already retired, you can't beat the Michigan state taxes - nonexistent on retirement pay.

They may all be Trolls ( those that live under the bridge) , but , there a lot of day trippers and fudges as well that visit SE UP land. Which , for me , meant moving further west and inland ........to get away from them ! On the other hand , we are all Tourists , when we leave our habit. I don't blame them for wanting to see our beautiful landscapes, just glad when they go home......

Maybe that person commented that way after reading about the trolls.

It's just kind of funny stuff -- some people like things one way, others like it another -- but really you can't just read about everyone living below the bridge being a troll and how they're glad to see them leave and then be surprised when a troll comes along and gets his remark in.

It's always funny -- city people look at rural people and wonder how can anyone live that way, rural people look at city people and think the exact same thing. You have people who would love to live in a skyscraper that had apartments, business offices, malls, and restaurants and never have to step foot out of their building and then there are people who want to be as far away from the skyscrapers as possible.

Some people look at living in the big cities, the congested urban areas with no green space as being incredibly dull, but others would go crazy living outside the urban areas. It isn't an age thing either, you can be young and love the wilderness areas, or you can be young and want the clubs and discos every night.
