There's a lot more green space in the middle of big cities than you might think. There are some huge forested parks in Philly, Baltimore, and DC where you can run for many miles without running into the "city". Most congestion you'll find might be figuring out how to get around horses on your trail.

i LOVE the UP and wish wish wish i could live back up there. i'm in georgia now, and what i wouldn't give to be able to sit on the grass and have a picnic... without worrying about being eaten alive by fire ants!! i just wish the job market and opportunities were better up there.
can you tell i'm already tired of the heat down here? it's only mid june and we've already had several days of 99+ days. UGH! it's not even officially summer yet!!

Thats why they call it " Hotlanta"...... I lived in the south a lot of years, in NC mountains , and , we never went down to Ga. in the summer, just too dam hot and humid ! Atlanta was 130 miles, great shopping, but , only in the winter.
Its been a wet spring here in the Up , the bugs are BIG !......hope they will die off soon.....we need head nets and lots of spray , last summer , not a problem.

I went to college for awhile at Montcalm Community College which is about an hour n.e. of Grand Rapids, MI.
I was amazed to discover during a classroom discussion that several of my students had never left the state of MI even on vacation, and there was one girl who had never left Montcalm county!!! Never even been to Grand Rapids! She was raised on a local farm and her parents never saw need to leave, so she had never saw the need. That just floored me!
I've lived all over the U.S. and travelled even more.

Well I figure they were happy enough where they were that they didn't feel the need to go anywhere else. I've known people as well that never have left their state. Some of them (usually older folk) didn't really care. They were happy where they were and didn't have a spark for adventure. Does make for boring stories though. Anyways overall I think getting out of your state for a while will really show the pro's and con's of an area's lifestyle. In my case I learned to appreciate my state a lot more than I did as a young restless teenager.

yes, that is alittle unusual to say the least. i enjoy traveling. one thing i have learned... living in georgia, you see a lot of out of state plates because we are a thorough-fare state. in michigan you don't see as many out of state plates, especially the further north you get!! i actually live off of Interstate 75... so when i go home, it's a straight shot north!!

I've lived in the UP all my life. and although I am young. that's WAY TOO LONG. I hate it. so much. if you don't like civilization and where all there is to do is outdoor activities like fishing (which I HATE the outdoors), then it's definitely the place for you. plus I also hate snow, so why am I living here in the place that gets the 2nd highest snowfall in the nation? that's just it. I'm moving away as soon as I can afford it. haha
