Moving to MI need advice please!!!!
Hi, I've been reading some of the posts and to be honest I'm kind of scared. My husband is being relocated to Owosso in a couple of months and I don't have an idea where to live. We currently live in Southern CA and a 30 min comute is common and easy but I really don't know there. I know is a totally different place. I was looking at Flushing and Swartz Creek area and also East Lansing too but I'm so confused. I will be going either to Lansing or Flint University but my husband will be working at Owosso. We just want a good school for our kids and a decent and safe place to live. Any advice ? Is the crime as bad as many people said?
Thanks for anything you can tell me, I'm totally lost and don't know where or what to look for.

Williamston
Williamston might be a good option. It would be an easy commute as it's close to M-52 which will take you directly into Owosso. They have good schools and is a charming little town. If you have always lived in SoCal you are in for some culture shock. Are you looking for small town, urban or rural?

Culture shock isn't the word! lol, in for a real treat.
If I were you folks I'd stay up towards Owosso more. The drive up m-52 in the winter is awful. Commuting all the way from Lansing is a rotten drive every day. There is Oakley north of town, Perry south of town, St Johns west of town and Corruna to the east. All nice little towns, safe and comfy. Owosso is even a pretty nice place depending on the area of town you're in.
I'm assuming that you folks have a bit of cash to work with given the RE prices in SoCal. If so, you shouldn't have any problem finding a beautiful old victorian in Owosso. There are some very nice historical homes just north of the main street through town. Close enough to Flint too, but far enough away so that you're not tripping over the junkies and drunks.

Actually, I can go all week without seeing a junkie or a drunk.

This is what we did.
You are smart to ask questions about where to live. I have received great advice on this forum. I justed moved here from the South two months ago.
We looked at Google Earth and Google Maps to help us understand the area when we were trying to find a home. You may want to consider a short term lease on a home or corporate housing. We signed a year lease and I would go back and change that if I could. Coming from California, hopefully you will be pleased with the house prices and/or rent.
Good luck on your search.

If your husband is working in Owosso then it would be a good idea to live there. There are lots of nice neighborhoods there, and you'll get a lot for your housing dollar. I'm assuming you won't be commuting to school daily so you won't have to worry about winter driving too much.
Even if you do commute daily to school you can always schedule classes around rush hour. Good move for you.

Yeah Owosso itself is a fine place to live. It's small but it has enough amenities that you don't feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Plus, if you're going to be going to either Lansing or Flint all of the time, you'll have everything you'd need anyways.
Also, by staying right in Owosso, only one of you would be using up a bunch of gas...so that's better than 2 right? The main thing I can say about the move is be prepared to buy a lot of warmer clothing. You might be in for a real surprise this winter.

Your eyes will bug out when you see how inexpensive prices houses are compared to the cost of a house in California.
