Army Corps of Engineers: Lake Superior level up - NewsFlash - mlive.com
Quote:
ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says rain in July raised Lake Superior to within five inches of its long-term average water level, putting it 16 inches higher than it was at the same time last year.
A slight rise also is expected in August.
With the higher water, the Corps' International Lake Superior Board of Control planned to increase the amount of water allowed to flow into Lakes Michigan and Huron, which have the same level and remain 13 inches below the long-term average.
The Michigan-Huron level rose an inch in July and is eight inches higher than a year ago

Senate approves Great Lakes compact
Associated Press
August 1, 2008
WASHINGTON -- The Senate has voted to ratify a compact to prevent the diversion of water from the Great Lakes.
The Senate approved the Great Lakes agreement Friday. The measure is pending in the House and President Bush has said he will sign it into law.
The agreement was negotiated by eight Great Lakes states. It prevents countries or remote states from tapping into the lakes from their natural drainage basin with rare exceptions.
States are also required to regulate their own large-scale water uses and promote conservation.
State leaders in the region developed the plan because they were concerned that the worldwide freshwater shortage would lead other regions to try to access the lakes.
Gov. Jim Doyle thanked the Senate for the quick approval in a statement released Friday afternoon.
"The Great Lakes define who we are in Wisconsin. They determine the kinds of jobs we have and our way of life. But more than that, the Great Lakes are a national treasure -- important to our nation and the world as both an environmental and economic asset. ...
"I look forward to working with the House of Representatives to get the Compact passed as quickly as possible."

Also, many towns in the thumb area are having their "insert-whatever-here" festivals.

Lotta big celebrities have a place up on the pinky of Michigan. It's one of the wealthiest areas around. Northport, Harbor Springs, etc. They can find a lot of seclusion here too.

This is a HUGE positive! Of course it is mostly positive for the other NFL teams, but I digress.
