You could take Historical "Route 66" from Santa Monica, CA. all the way up to Chicago,Ill. First it would be a staight shot East, AZ, N.M.,TX(pan handle) to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

I think it would add a few too many miles to the trip though it would be fun. We are heading out through Utah, Colorado and on to Michigan. According to yahoo about 33 hours of driving. We close on our house on Thursday of next week, that and gas is expensive so no extra miles.

You must be in Central or Northern CA.
I miss the seasonal beauties of Mich. I'm originally from Cadillac, Mi.

Good news? - well, here in little Plymouth, besides the Coffee Bean having more great events going on than ever, the Art In the Park Festival was perhaps the best one yet (and is now the 2nd largest in all of Michigan).

I went to Cadillac last fall and it instantly became one of my favorite towns in michigan. It must have been an amazing place to grow up.

Yes it was. We were raised on a Dairy Farm outside of town. Funny thing..I was born in a house in town across the street from the Kraft Co.
Because of a car accident my mother was in, one of my younger sisters was born deaf. So when she got older(1969) we had to move down south(Berrien Springs) for special schooling.
When I got older I decided that I didn't want to go back to Cadillac because I wanted to remember it the way it was.
After living in SoCal(Riv,/SanBndo Co) since the mid 70's, in 2006 I was invited to a wedding in Ohio so I decided that I'd fly back, rent a car and take a grand tour of Mich, from Columbus,Oh. to North of the Mackinaw Bridge with stops in between.
First stop was Bridgeman, Mi. to see some cousins and then I went over to Roseville, Monroe, Sterling Heights.ect to see some sisters and Bro's I hadn't seen in 30yrs.
Then up above Saginaw and cut back across to Cadillac. The first thing I notice as I was the Amish had taken up stake because I passed a horse and buggy on my way into Cadillac.
With you living in CA, you know how fast things change out there(?). Not Cadillac. Even as a kid I remembered that the South end of Cadillac ended at the fair grounds. Well, driving through town, there where some slight differences, right anle parking was now paralell parking and the town had expanded just past the fair ground and a SuperWal-mart was added. Other than that most everything else was the same. Even an old feed mill (Harris & Mills) was still in the middle of town. But I've just heard the that was going to be removed and replaced with a YMCA. I was very happy to see that things wern't much different.

yeah, Mitchell street was really charming. I walked up courthouse hill (?) and got a great view of lake cadillac among all the old houses. Really nice little town. In fact, I'm passing through on my way to Traverse City in a week and a half (counting down the days)

nope, Orange County. We are starting out on the 15 (after the 55 and the 91 of course) we'll stay on that until somewhere in Utah. I have the directions printed out somewhere, though at this point they may have been plunked in a box and loaded on the truck. The truck is being picked up this morning sometime.

Quick tip: when referring to interstates or state highways here, drop the "The" from in front of the number. It flags you right off as from the West coast. Nothing wrong with that, just it will get you a funny look once in awhile. Have a safe trip home to Michigan.

Well, the good news in our house is that my husband's boss just announced his retirement and guess who's next in line?....Yep! Score, lol. According to Dh there will be some inside politics played but by the end of the next few months he'll be out of his cube and into an office and a raise! Yay!
There's also rumblings (from the Dh) that we should put a pool in next summer. And that will stimulate our little corner of the MI economy as we hire someone to do the work.
And I've decided to go back to school and get my Master's.
Life's good over here.
