Smile Canton, Michigan

My family and I moved here from Massachusetts a couple of months ago and we are trying to find a place to call home here in Michigan. I fell in love with Plymouth and it's quaint downtown the very first time that I visited the area. However, most recently, we viewed a neighborhood in Canton, called Central Park, that we have taken a real liking to. I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on Canton and if you think that it is a nice place to raise a family. We have two young boys, aged three and one, and we just really want to find the right place for all of us to call HOME. Is there a big difference between Canton and Plymouth and if so what is it? I know that they share the same school district so I am wondering what sets each town apart?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and comments!

Default Canton

Canton is a great place to live.
I am a life time resident of the area.
We have a great municipal recreational center and excellent schools.
We also have an Ikea as well as a variety of stores.
If you are in to that sort of thing.

Traffic is horrible all over. But it is something to get used to.

Residential bldg has slowed down tremendously due to the lousy economy, however there are plently of newer homes to choose from.

Central Park is a good neighborhood (I happened to live across the street in another sub)
My only criticism with Central Park is that it is an all "Pulte" built subdivision so all the homes tend to look the same.
But if it works for you than cool.

If you move here you have to refer yourself as a "Cantonite"
The difference between the two towns is that Plymouth folk tend to be stuffy and pretenious. (Lots of blue haired ladies)

We have had to establish an identity for ourselves as for decades this used to be a farm town and Plymouth folk used to see us "bumpkins"

I`ve lived in the south end of Canton for 8 years now. It`s been a very good place to live.Canton homes tend to be less expensive than Plymouth. The traffic can be hectic on Ford Road but you can learn to maneuver your way around town.

Keep in mind that south of Palmer Road the school districts may be Westland or Van Buren Township schools. Most everyone perfers Canton schools.

Find yourself a buyers real estate agent who knows the area to steer you in the right direction. It`s a big time buyers market at the moment.

Thanks butternut and robjr100 for your reply. We are still house hunting as there are so many homes on the market in both Plymouth and Canton. That makes me nervous and we knew we were coming into a depressed econonmy before we left Massachusetts. However, we just weren't anticpating Pfizer to shutter their Ann Arbor facility and ABN AMRO Mortgage be bought by Citigroup in the midst of hurting economy from the automotive industry. Both will have yet another negative impact on our local economy.

Oh well, such is life I guess!?! Does anyone else have an opinion one way or the other on Canton or Plymouth?

Thank you in advance for those of you that provide your feedback.
