[quote=True, no hurricanes up here but we have had straightline winds that are of hurricane force. So windstorm insurance might not be a bad idea.[/QUOTE]

Well Mr. Aussie........I guess I will have to drag my cute butt up there also I am driving up next Wed. to visit the fiance in Flint to visit her cute butt . A lovely 11 hour drive through the salt and snow of Penn., Ohio, and then Michigan. I don't know if you have read my other posts, but I will be trying to settle in Grand Rapids if I can land a job. I am in the medical field and people say I should not have a problem, but it's not exactly a large metro area and there are only, I believe, two major hospitals there, we'll see. My kids don't want me to go, one is grown, and the other is a Virginia Tech student/surfer boy. I love this area, but the housing market and the recent regular increases of assesments ( which means more taxes) is getting ridiculas. So to me the housing market in Michigan is very attractive. A co-worker I work with whose husband took a transfer to Detroit for Ford is putting in a offer on a bank owned foreclosed house worth 450,000 in Canton. I think for people coming into the state ( the few of us) it is a great opportunity to take advantage of the declining market. The market here in Va. Beach is slowing down, it's just the local government increasing the assesments every year from 10% to 20% which means higher monthly payments. I understand the real estate tax in Michigan is frozen for the purchase price of the house for the length of time you own it. I think that is a positive.....wow did I say positive on a Michigan forum Well good luck Mr. Aussie and once you get here, Welcome!!!!!! To The USA

hi again Virginia1
Yes i have read some of your stuff & many others.
Thanx for the upfront welcome Maybe we can have a beer one day after we both have made the move & lol about all the BS that appears in here at times.
Where im going is small towns area so im happy to pass up the big city life as ive been doin that for the past 3.4 years & i have not missed the fast lane at all.
Enjoy your drive n be safe is all i can say in the snow conditions. Im looking forward to having a white xmas & 4 seasons as ive never lived with 4 seasons where we get snow. Im ex Sydney now living in the gold coast hinter land thats QLD. At the coast is where they hold the indy race if you follow the races.
I have never driven in the snow so it will be all new to me.
There are many things i will have to learn about your taxing systems local levels & all the way to the top if i fancy on starting a business there so i will be looking with eyes wide open ears on high alert to hear whats going on.
Ive been doin lots n lots of research about anything n everything from A to Z.
The BIG POSITIVE is there gonna get us moving there...lol well at least you ,im not 100% sure which side of the river im gonna be living on yet , time will tell soon enough.
regards Oy OY Oy.

NOT that long ago in the grand scheme of things.

There was also one weak (F0) tornado near the Genesee and Shiawassee county line. However, significant tornado damage was not discernable from the straight-line wind damage. At the Saginaw (MBS) airport, a wind gust of 86 mph was recorded, and at the Essexville Coast Guard station a wind gust of 81 mph was measured.

How strong are derecho winds?
By definition winds in a derecho must meet the National Weather Service criterion for severe wind gusts (greater than 57 mph) at most points along the derecho path. In the stronger derecho events winds can exceed 100 mph. For example, as a derecho roared through northern Wisconsin on July 4, 1977, winds of 115 mph were measured. More recently, the derecho which swept across Wisconsin and Lower Michigan during the early morning hours of May 31, 1998 produced a measured wind gust of 128 mph in eastern Wisconsin and estimated gusts up to 130 mph in Lower Michigan.

Yes, I know it's been 9 years but that does not mean it has never happened. Liz

Mr. Aussie, Since we are both from strong traditional beer drinking countries ( I am from Germany) I would be glad to down a few beers with ya and laugh and discuss some of the BS here, which I am sure I have had some input here with my ramblings. Yes I do follow the races and have always dreamed of going down under to visit Australia. Many moons ago I ran into an Australian girl in a oceanside town in North Carolina. I am sure this phrase is universal, but I was goo goo gaa gaa over her Been in love with Australia ever since....he he. Four seasons are awesome, prefer it that way, so I hope you enjoy it once you get here. To keep on topic: See Michigan, folks are coming up, even with many negative comments about certain areas of Michigan and we will make the best of it with whom ever is left.

Virginia1: I've been reading for a while and usually like what you have to say -- but you've lost me here. It's incredibly naive to say that because there is snow and cold temps that there is no global warming. The earth is WARMING -- slowly but surely over time. When nearly every scientist in the world agrees with this, I do not at all understand why people make it into a political issue. I can (and am) still be a conservative and understand this. To me, to disagree with this science is about the same thing as saying "the earth is flat".

Every time there is a severe thunderstorm warning issued for a county (criteria for a thunderstorm to be severe is to have straight line winds in excess of 70mph or higher) it happens all the time all year round. Last summer a small tornado touched down not far from my fathers house and winds were estimated at 150.

Mr orchardman, Well I hope I am not off topic here, but just to clairfy ( I think). I agree wholeheardtly global warming is going on, I just dont' agree with Gore. I have not seen the film and will one day, but I am may be wrong in this assertion, that Gore feels global warming is man induced or that man caused the majority of the symptoms of global warming. (If I am wrong in that assertion, then I apologize in advanced ) I feel that it is a cycle that earth goes through and we are living in that cycle. I think the extreme enviromentalist who have a agenda like to blame man and most of the time they have knee jerk reactions, ex: hot as heck in one part of the country ( which they focus on when it works for them) and in the month of Feb. most of the mid plain states were socked with record falling snow and cold temps. ( which the extreme don't focus on ). Heck I believe it's either Antarctica or Artica, one of them is gaining ice, so....what does not mean. BUT of all the complaining of folks who live in Michigan who are tired of the snow and cold just hang in there, it will get warmer and warmer and Michigan will be the place to live for the next 100 years. This I know as a fact, each year the migratory birds are leaving Michigan later and later each year. So...to keep on topic Don't be scared away newcomers, it's getting warmer in Michigan.
