A small population decline wouldn't be noticed in Germany or Japan, but this is the U.S.A. a nation still in its years of peak growth. The rest of America is booming, while Michigan, Northern Ohio, upstate New York, western PA, and a couple of other places continue to be rust belt laggards.

United States - Employment Status

This table (part of the 2006 estimates) shows some telling trends in unemployment and income....thought it was very interesting.
