Plus they have Science North & Dynamic Earth which is a very cool place for kids and adults. The mine tours are memorable as well.

Thanks! you guys have been very helpful. Im not sure how the trip is gonna be made yet since the oldest of my three children is only five. It will have to be a drive though, and I thank you for the suggested route. I love seeing new areas. By the way, does anyone know where the nearest airport to the Soo is? (Both Lower and UP) We don't usually need to fly, but just in case...
I know that we don't want to stay here for much longer. Anyone who has ever lived where you get the seasonal changes and rain often will understand why El Paso (Desert scape) is not a place to perminatly put down roots. According to the locals here we have got "too much" rain this year. I disagree. I wish it would rain some more. And last January we got a whole whopping 2 inches of snow!!..LOL. There was a "Winter Weather Advisory" put out down here because of it, and schools closed down..lol. It is very beautiful here because of the Franklin Mountains, but for me it is a place to visit not stay. Plus the city living gets stressful. The population is high enough, but to add to the stress is the fact that most of the population is Spanish speaking and not very accomodating to English speakers. I miss the quiet of the country life. Growing up in Michigan we only occasionally heard the passing of a car over the bugs outside. Here we have to listen to constant traffic and thats when you are not listening to your neighbors play music from the car or house with the base so high that your walls are vibrating. I am just so excited about going back "home" to Michigan.

You can fly out of Chippewa County (south of the Soo by 20/25 minutes on I-75). You can get a non stop to Detroit. You can also fly out of Sawyer International (south of Marquette, about two hours plus from the Soo). They fly into Chicago.

I love the Soo, I have family that live up there. There is a nice tourist downtown area by the locks, with the haunted maze and a few other tourist type things. There is a place called Lakefront(I think so) It's a 2 story restaurant across from the locks that has awesome white fish.
Also the crime reports can be funny because stuff like that wouldn't make the paper downstate.

Sault Police also report an incident at a local golf course where patrons had apparently utilized the carts to conduct their own game of “bumper cars” while playing at this facility. An inspection of the damaged property revealed there were tire marks and scratches on the carts resulting from the unauthorized activity. The suspects are apparently from Canada — specifically the Toronto area — and police were unable to get a hold of them to discuss the matter.
Authorities instructed representatives from the golf course to charge the damage to the credit card of the man who rented it, seemingly concluding their investigation into this matter.

Improper paperwork
Chippewa County Sheriff deputies were on routine patrol when a vehicle was observed speeding on H-63 near Gaines Highway. A subsequent investigation revealed the operator could not produce numerous required documents. Trevor M. Osburn, 28, of Pickford was arrested for driving without a valid license and no proof of insurance; he was also cited for an expired plate and speeding before being booked in the Chippewa County Jail.

Shin scraped
Sault Police were called to an alleyway in the 500 block of Adams for a complaint that could have been far more serious. According to reports, a bike operator struck the front corner of a 2008 Chevrolet Impala around 10 a.m. Reports indicate, via a conversation with the boy’s mother, that he suffered a scraped shin from the impact. The bike was not as fortunate with heavy damage to the handlebars and front tire. There was minor damage noted to the Chevrolet.
Police did not issue any citations and the boy sought his own medical treatment following the mishap.

Hello all! My husband and I are possibly moving to the Soo in the next 2 months. He works for the Fed Gov and I am a teacher, do any of you have an idea on what the teaching situation is up and around there? I would appreciate any help anyone could give us. We are originally from Ann Arbor but have lived in Tucson the last 2 years and are trying to get closer to family. However, we don't know very much about U.P. living!

Anyone visiting the Soo should plan to visit the Valley Camp. It is a lake freighter converted to a floating museum. It is east of the locks, near the Coast Guard station. The director the last time I visited was retired Coast Guard captain who led the search for the Edmund Fitzgerald. Quite interesting to talk to. They also have a very nice gift store with some really great books on shipping and lore of the Great Lakes area.

Scoronado,
Hello! I saw your postings on here and thought we have a lot in common. My husband is also a BP and is currently stationed in Tucson, however we just got word that we might be going to the Soo in the next month or so. I am also a teacher and we are both from Michigan. Small world ay? I was just curious to see if you had any news yet regarding a move up north? Would love to hear from you!
