Now Odawa in Petoskey is laying off workers, just a week ago they said that Kewadin in the U.P. was cutting 2% of their workforce. Here are links to each story.

Greektown Casino's owner to lay off 2% of workers: Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians struggles with deficit (Detroit Free Press) - 01 Aug 03:00 (broken link)

9&10 News: Odawa Casino Resort cut more than 50 positions

Feel for all the workers who are losing their jobs.

Yeah, with the price of everything up, people have less to throw away at the casinos. The only time we go to Odawa is for the concerts, we never gamble

Yeah, and then they go and *brilliantly* build a horse racing track out by the airport. Just what we need ! In a state that has the highest employment rate and highest rate of job loss....another freaking gambling establishment ! WooHoo....another business with instability that will suck what little money is left from the area ! And ya know..... the greater Detroit area is BIG into horses ! Afterall, it's farm country down here ~rolls eyes~.

The horse track was a rumor down here for years and when it became a reality this year my first thought was how dumb can we be? Seriously. This is the best we can do as far as bringing in new businesses? More gambling? How about something a little more worthwhile !

Speaking of gambling-has anyone heard what the Michigan Lottery is planning on doing? They are gonna limit the # of times a 4 digit # is allowed in a day. For instance, on Friday 8/8/08, say you went in to play 8808, and they only allowed say 5000 tickets with that #, if you tried to buy the 5001 ticket it would reject the wagar. I overheard a salesperson talking about it the other day. Sounds to me like the lottery is hurting too!

Here is a link to that:

Horses are a big industry in Michigan.

I live within walking distance of Odawa, and I rarely gamble there, mostly because their slot machines are completely unforgiving. If they really want to boost attendance they could loosen those damn things up a bit and let someone win once in a while! Believe me, not a week goes by that I don't meet someone who agrees with that take!

Odawa's summer concert lineup has pretty much sucked also, which has been a big dissapointment after they had some really good shows last winter.

Maybe in the upper 2/3 of the state, but trust me, Romulus and the surrounding cities are not at all about horses, or any animal for that matter!

At one time I showed Quarter Horses. One of our biggest shows was at the fair grounds in Detroit. The Michigan Breeder's Futurity is one of the largest in the nation.

Casinos are a sad thing, in a state with the nations highest unemployment, second most drunk driving convictions, we have places to fuel problems. While these establishments may bring in profits to their intended beneficiaries, it is as the expense to many others. Its unfortunate we rely on gaming so much in a state that needs a clean slate.
