Car Insurance in Michigan
Hey all. I'll be moving to Flint next week, and I need to know where to turn for car insurance.
I need the best, lowest price on the minimum state coverage for my ancient (16-year-old) car.
Any suggestions?

Best bet is to go into an independent agent who deals with several companies. They do all the leg work in finding the lowest deal they can for you and saves you all the headache. I found that Frankenmuth Insurance was the lowest for my vehicles and house insurance, and it is a very high rated company on top of low prices. Way higher ranked in customer satisfaction and service than all the big names you run across.

I deal with an independent company out of Ohio (Grange). We used an agent and she said it was the cheapest. My 9 year old car is 120 a month for just liability, and I'm a young driver.

I only pay $41/month in Ohio. I hate the thought of having to pay triple that.
I'll definitely try to find an independent agent in the first couple of weeks I'm in town.
Thanks!

I insure two vehicles, both of which are Chevy Suburbans. Mine is an older POS, while the family one is much nicer and newer. Both have towing, collision, comprehensive as well as liability. Both are down as being driven 500+ miles a week and we pay $110 a month. I am 44 my wife 34 and no other drivers in the house yet. It pays to shop around and have 2 or 3 independent agents on the trail when you are first looking in a new area for insurance coverage. I had 3 looking when I came back to Michigan and went with the one that had the best service even though another one beat the price by $15 a month it took several rounds of calls to get back with them and the company was one I had never heard of before. Service is worth something as well.

Call Al Bourdeau Insurance Agency - (810) 742-3411 - They are located on Davison Rd between Genesee and Center.
They deal with several companies. Before I moved to NC, I was going through Frankenmuth Mutual with them and it was the best rate for me. My sister also goes through them and has Titan- which was the best for her.
I used them, left for Progressive and came crawling back after my rates were increased every 6 mos (with no violations).

I can't imagine you'd have to pay triple that for a 16 year old car with just PL/PD (no collision/comp), assuming the car is paid for. A lot will depend on your driving record, your age, and interestingly your credit report (which insurance companies use as part of your ratings now). We pay about $100/month for two "almost brand new" cars with full coverage (basically perfect driving records).

My insurance was reduced by 50% when I moved away from Michigan. Yikes.

Michigan is a lousy place to insure a car. The no-fault damage rule means good drivers have to carry comprehensive to protect themselves from the negligence of others. But medical is not no-fault so the threat of litigation looms and premiums are sky-high. And then the State steps in with the MCCA fee on every vehicle you own no matter how few drivers there are in the household. It's 2/3 the premium on my motorcycle.
