I recently graduated witha degree in Geography and GIS from MSU. I have a variety of expirience and a goal of applying my skills to MI environment and the Great Lakes. With the economy the way it is, job openings have been scarse. However, jobs out of state are pouring in. I have job offers on the table but can't bring myself to make a choice because I don't think I'm ready to give up on northern MI yet. If anyone knows anything about a job in the enviro. field or anything remotely related please let me know. My heart and passion is in MI and I want nothing more than to stay here.

The unemployment rate is even higher in the U.P than in the lower pennisula.
It hovers between 10-11% My advice.... take the plunge and leave. After you get a few years job experience under your belt than move back. Try Wyoming, a similar climate for you yoopers. I am working on packing up myself. Keep this in mind. As long as you live here, you will have problems gaining the employment that you want. (A fellow college grad) |

Thanks for the encouragment. I'm not planning on moving elsewhere. I don't need muh to get by. It's just me and my dog. We are fairly humble and frugile. If it takes me 10 years to apply my skills to a real job than I'll wait it out. Plan now, is to save money and move up to Marquette in teh spring. I'll pick up a job and keep my eyes open for jobs with the mine or the state. How do I inquire about jobs at the mine. Figured I'd just contact them directly. Thanks again |

It is true that the U.P has a higher unemployment than the rest of the state. It is true for us new college grads that jobs are hard to come by in the field we want, in Michigan. It is true that for every one good college entry job thats is open there are at least 100 applicants. (Working in a bait-shop or Star bucks does not count) I know I have been there. Have you ever sat in a room with several other people interviewing for the same job. Attended a job fair with 100s of other people recently?? How many resumes have you sent out?? It is true that if "jessrnelson" chooses to stay he/she will find the Michigan job market to be problematic. I am not trying to start a war, just keeping it real with a fellow alum. |

After working for the DNR (in the summer as temporary work each year) I can tell you that the state does NOT offer alot of employment. Some of the conservation officers I worked with were also biologists in northern lower (forestry, etc,) and consequently were laid off each november, only to be re-hired in early April. My advice is to look into the National park service, they have alot of oppourtunities. Good Luck!

Don't you have a placement office at MSU? Wonderful tool, also spend lots of time researching recruiters online, someone might be able to help you. There are also places to post your resume online, utilize those. If that is truly the area you wish to be, than visit and try to get contacts. Good Luck.
