What's your favorite campground/State Park?
I just got back from a five day camping trip up north and it was stunning (as usual). My last night was spent in Wilderness State Park, on the tip of the mitten and it was gorgeous. My campsite was right on the lake (as in: I open my tent, and there it is). The drive in was so thickly wooded I felt like the only person for a hundred miles. It immediately became my favorite Michigan state park.
So for you happy Michigan campers, what's your favorite? for camping, hiking, etc...?

I haven't been to all that many but I very much liked Muskallonge Lake State Park in the UP because it's right on a lake but also Lake Superior. A few of the campsites are right on the lake.

WILDERNESS is the BEST
I saw your reply in the food thread...i am sooo happy you loved wilderness...as i said my favorite summer of all time was spent working there!
you'll just have to go back again for blueberries next summer
and yes my favorite state park is wilderness state park.......i may be biased though!
there are some amazing trails at wilderness too.....and many people don't know about them...along with awesome dunes on the southwest side of the park...
the endangered bird the Piping Plover often nests on the parks beaches where they are protected by ropes and volunteer "watchers"....
you can see virgin forests on the mt. nebo trail.....amazing trees!.....
.....yeah i love it there

My favorite is...
South State Park at Higgins Lake. Nothing beats crystal clear water that's up to your waste 100 feet out - it's one big party in the summer. It's probably not the best camping but it's a good time in the water.
I went to high school there and every summer our little town was filled with "downstaters" because of it's easy access off both 127 and 75.

I've stayed at Michigamme Shores Campground several times over the years and really liked it there also. Just down the road a few miles from Van Riper.
Have been going to school over the summer and now also for the fall. Probably won't make it up there this year

I always loved Ludington St. Park. Love the lighthouse, the little town, Lake MI, the sand dunes being close, and Hamlin Lake. It is pretty hard to get into though. I also enjoyed Silver Lake St. Park.
I thought Brimley St. Park was very neat and clean too. I also love the State Parks in the thumb. Port Crescent, Sleeper.

Funny you mention Ludington, I go into the park "proper" at least once a week and it is on Park land we take the kids swimming a couple times a week during the summer. I live about 7 miles from the park so we use it all the time for hiking, and swimming, the boat ramp into Hamlin Lake, etc....
