Default Portage MI question

Hi everyone in Portage. My husband and I used to live there for several years and we just loved it. We are now in central michigan and we are looking for a job in the midwest. We would love to come back to Portage but there aren't any jobs for my husbands line of work. So my question is for any of you that have traveled to other areas in the midwest, have you ever been to a community that was similar to Portage? We like the progressiveness of it and the nicely landscaped sidewalks, the community feel, etc...
Thank you for your input,
Theresa

Portage does keep a clean, 'well-manicured landscape' image. I've seen nice things like that in Wichita, KS (see images from Google Earth).

Elkhart, IN is very, very similar to Portage. Same suburban, upscale feel and only about 30 mins. from South Bend. It is also close to the Kalamazoo/Portage area (only 45 mins. from Portage). Kentwood and Wyoming in suburban Grand Rapids also have the same feel. Elkhart and the GR area might have some jobs in that field.
