I still get regular job postings emailed to me from MI and AZ where I live, I'd get 10-15 AZ jobs and usually 1 or 2 MI jobs with one usually being the Navy. Now I DON'T GET ANY from michigan!! Sad part is I still own my home in Ypsilanti, MI which is worth 25% less than what I owe.
Can anyone tell me the laws surrounding people walking away from their Mortgage? Do they usually come after you (ie. garnish your wages, go after assests) to recover their debt?

The Economy here is horrible, I just finished my bachelors degree in IT and can not find anything. I was told by my counselor to get out of Michigan. Move to Texas or another city that has something going on. There is nothing here. If you find a job good luck holding onto it.

I'm an ASE certified master mechanic with an advanced certification in Driveablity/Performance (L1). I am also certified by Chrysler in all areas and Ford in all but one. Five years ago I was making 64,700/yrs. The dealership I was working at (Union shop by the way) closed its doors three years ago and now I deliver pizzas and have two pt side lines. That's all their is here. When the Sunday paper comes out, their is almost nothing in it for most people except scam telemarketing jobs or jobs that no adult would want, nothing that pays anything. If a real job is listed hundreds of people will show up to apply. YES it is as bad or worse than you've heard. If you can avoid coming, do yourself a favor and don't come here. If you have money on hand to buy a house and don't need to work that's another story. You can pick up a nice house for pennies on the dollar. So many have simply been abandoned they can hardly give them away. I've considered abandoning my house and still may.
Winters aren't that bad.

The economy isn't much worse than the rest of the nation at this point. There are no good jobs, unless you're in the medical field or you plan on starting your own business. Underemployment is more of a problem than unemployment, however. There are jobs, but they're at McDonald's or Meijer's or with a temp agency. I'm graduating from college (WMU) next spring and I don't expect to find a "career" job. However, I have no plans to leave Michigan. I would NEVER move somewhere like Texas or Florida! I'm going down with this ship.
Winters aren't bad, certainly better than a southern summer.

This was me a year ago (even went to WMU!) I was determined to stick it out no matter what because I loved Michigan. I still love Michigan, but I want to get started on my life. I'm hoping to land a teaching job out west next spring. I won't even look in the state. There isn't any point for my profession.

I'm sure SOME school in Michigan is hiring. I know some teachers were hired here in Three Rivers last year. Have you tried the U.P.?
I have it even worse, I'm an aviation major, and there are NO aviation jobs in Michigan! If I have to move, I would like to at least stay in the Upper Midwest (Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota). I couldn't stand life in the south or the west coast. I need four seasons and great lakes.

If it's any consolation, people graduating from universities in the past often did have to relocate to get started. If you aren't settled down yet -- don't have a house and family, then it's a great time to try different things, experience other place and people.
You just cannot have gone through all the work getting a degree and then just letting it go because getting job experience is real important -- a long gap between the degree and the job will make it all for naught. Later -- down the road, things will change but at least you would have a career going when it does and can decide them to go back or even move onto other places.

I disagree, with 2500 jobs being cut before Dec 1 where I work, and other jobs following suit, it is terrible and YES it is worse than other states.
There are several jobs posted for northern states with 4 seasons because that states economy isn't as bad.
I hope you do okay going down with the ship, as you said.
I just wish we could sell the house faster and move on.

Do yourself a favor and try something new; try living in another state. There are lots of other great locations in this country to start a life. You deserve better than Michigan. To paraphrase one of my favorite authors:
"Michigan is a huge economic cemetery and our careers and economic well-being are all dying, slowly."
Run for your life. Seriously.

Well, here's my story:
I graduated in December 2006 with a teaching degree--certified in history and social studies. I looked mainly in West Michigan and despite my connections, by high marks and glowing letters of recommendation, I didn't get a single interview.
So that fall I subbed, in the meantime I took up coaching because that would make me more marketable. In April--just before I prepared to leave MI--I found out that I was four classes short of an english teaching certificate. I like English, and it would make me more marketable. It would also show that I've been furthering my education in the meantime.
So instead of leaving, I stayed, and got stellar grades and got my certificate this august. In the meantime, I looked STATEWIDE--from Ironwood to Suburban Detroit and.....still no interview. So despite networking, going back to school, diversifying my abilities, I still haven't gotten a teaching job. This time I decided to leave Michigan--either in December or in the Spring. I wasn't even going to bother looking here.
It really is that bad, and with the economic downturn, and still rising unemployment, there's simply no point in staying. I'm not pessimistic about our future, and Michigan can always bounce back--but at this point in my life I can't just wait around and sub forever.
