I completely agree. Except for Saturday's snowstorm, all we have gotten is a dusting to an inch that melts off by noon. Major snow missed us to the north, south, east, and west. Now the forecast is nothing but rain and spring-like temperatures, no snow in sight. Michiana is not "Michigan," it might be within the state but the weather is not true Michigan weather. Not nearly enough snow.

I won't even be spending Christmas in Michigan (going to Atlanta, GA to see my family) so I have a 0% chance of a white Christmas.

Be careful what you wish for. I have been in Atlanta waking up to 1 " of snow , and , the town went nuts ! No school for a week.

I completely understand. I do NOT want to see snow in Atlanta, if only because the locals don't know how to handle it. They forget all driving skills at the sight of a single flurry.

I lived there when I was a kid and people would FREAK OUT for an INCH of snow, or even the forecast of snow. I remember one time when they were forecasting a dusting to an inch of snow. There was a winter storm warning, they cancelled school everywhere, and there were mobs in stores buying milk, bread, and canned goods. The high that day was 50, it didn't snow at all, and it was warm and sunny all week.

I was describing the, er, unpredictability of MI weather to a friend in Pensacola, and he vowed never to set foot here. A friend of mine who grew up a block away from me on the East side of Detroit was forced to move to AZ due to partner's job hunt, and he can't stand the monotony of the dry heat and blazing sun day after day.

It takes all kinds, I guess.

I have been very happy with the weather this winter. Day after day I look out the window and see scenes from The Fearless Vampire Killers, a remarkably Christmasy movie with continually falling fat snowflakes and horse-drawn sleighs jingling hither and yon. It's a terrific vampire comedy, too, as Christmas movies go.

But here is my burning question. Who set this crazy rule that weathermen on TV are supposed to call it "snow showers" now instead of "snow flurries"? I'll grant you that MI snow can change to falling slush or driving rain faster than you can say Jake Rabinowitz, but when it is in fact snow, it is flurrying, not showering. Where do I write to complain?

I also lived thru the " storm of the century" a few years back. Even Atlanta got a foot of ice and some snow , and wind. I lived in the NC mountains and , we got 4 feet over nite ! had a total of 6' on the ground , before it was over. Power was out for 2 weeks , some places. many people died , and , 4 wheel drive , would not go anywhere. The medics used snow cats from the local ski slope to get people to the hospital. Quite a storm , and , the wind was at times at my house 80 miles per hour. They even made a movie about the blizzard , which , it truly was. Growing up in Iowa , I never saw anything worse , just as bad , but not worse, and , with limited snow plowing available. They used road graders , with little success. I will never forget it.....and , on mountain roads , it was tricky even when we could get out w/ 4x4. SC got hit harder than N. Georgia. Greenville was a mess , as was Asheville , I lived in between at 4,000 feet. The temp that nite after the storm dropped to 25 below and froze my well, good thing I had a whole house generator.

I remember that one. It hit in 1993, and I was 6 years old at the time. Where I lived saw 6" of snow, a record for that area (Central GA). We lost power for a while. Temps were well below average. As a kid, it was fun, but overall it was a horrible tragedy. Michigan can handle that kind of weather, the south cannot.

JIMANDTHOM is on a distinguished road
About a month ago, I posted that I wished we would get some "nasty" winter weather here in the very, absolute SE corner of MI., that many people don't like. Well, we got it and it looks and feels wonderful. We have about 10" on the ground, had blowing and drifting and with some near zero temps. Yeah, by UP standards its just a bit of a dusting but we are happy have what we do have. The only downside is that it makes us miss the UP all the more. The snow also makes the woodburner much more pleasing. If the sauna were outdoors, it would be a perfect time.

I don't care how much you like winter. This weather is brutal even by UP standards. At least we have sun though (for now).
