Moving to Michigan/ need help
I am relocating to Michigan and am seriously considering the GP areas. I have been researching the area and the homes for a few months now and have found a place that I love but am not sure if the area is a good and safe place to live, it is on Neff St., one and a half blocks away from Mack in GP. Would you be familiar with that area? I want to be in a "very" safe area where I can go out and walk and not have to worry too much. If price were not an issue for me I'm sure I would probably live as close to the water as possible or more central. I'd like to be near enough to walk to shopping areas and parks, etc. I'm told all the pointe areas have their own, anyway I need some input from someone that has lived there, can you help?

I don't live in that area but I have seen posts from folks that do so I'm sure you'll get helpful replies.
Good luck and welcome!

I don't know where you are moving from, but Michigan weather is cold! Minimal sunshine, the summers are great, and the beaches, but I'm looking to get out! Manistee is a decent affordable city on lake Michigan, but you can only enjoy the lake half of the year

Grosse Pointes
The Grosse Pointes are a relatively safe area. The police department is very good. But you are very, very close to Detroit and it's problems. Usually the further from Detroit the less crime. Look at the street address and map it out. The closer to the Water and further from Detroit would be the area you want to be in. If the house is close to Detroit then I might consider a different house.

I agree, all of the Pointes have a very good police force and if you were to have any problems they would be at your door in a matter of minutes. As for taking walks and etc. outside, it is about as safe as you can get. Grosse Pointe is different than any other inner ring suburb, it will hopefully stay nice and it has the Lake bordering it.
Other suburbs that you may also like that are a bit less expensive and further away from the city are St. Clair Shores and Harrison Twp, both which are on Lake St. Clair. If you have your heart set on the Pointes and can afford it, go for it.

I grew up a few blocks from Mack in GP. The neighborhoods vary wildly -- you'll have to look around and see what you think. The cruddy neighborhoods look obviously cruddy as they are dominated by badly-tended rental properties. Neff was an OK street when I lived around there. I can't say the people are very friendly there as a rule (she said diplomatically).

Are you sold on the Detroit area? If not, I would advise looking into areas on the west side of the state.
Grand Rapids (Kentwood, Grandville, Wyoming), Kalamazoo (Portage, Mattawan, Schoolcraft) and the general Three Rivers/Cassopolis/Elkhart, Indiana area (known locally as Michiana) are all great places to live, much better than anything in Metro Detroit. All of these areas are much safer, cheaper, and just plain better than Detroit or it's suburbs, and they all have great shopping and parks, as well as lakes and water.
I'm from Three Rivers, so I have to recommend that area to you. Great small town, about 30 minutes from the much larger cities of Elkhart, IN and Kalamazoo, MI, and about 45 minutes from Niles, South Bend, IN, and Mishawaka, IN, also large towns with plenty to do. There are numerous lakes in the area (Fisher Lake, Long Lake, and a bunch of smaller lakes and ponds) as well as three beautiful rivers with great fishing, swimming, etc. (St. Joseph, Rocky, and Portage). It's also surrounded by beautiful forest and farmland.
If you're interested in a bigger city atmosphere, look into Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo, which are both towns of about 200,000 (GR is bigger). Both have better economies than Detroit and are much lower in crime and cost of living
