What size communities are you looking for? What size lake are you looking for? With 11,000 inland lakes and bordering 4 of the 5 Great Lakes, that is a pretty wide open question. Climate? Jobs needed? Type community: Active, laid-back, artistic, blue collar, etc...? There are literally thousands of lakeside communities that fit that broad question. I like the West side of the State on Lake Michigan. Also like the Lake Superior shoreline a lot. There are some real nice towns along Lake Huron I like also. Lake Erie not so much for me, but some love that corner of the State, I happen to be one who doesn't like things that crowded.

I am not that familiar with inland lakes. Saugatuck, Charlevoix, Petoskey... some of my favorite lakefront towns, all are pretty upscale, cute, and artsy. Pretty much all of Michigan's cute and artsy lakefront towns are also very tourist-oriented, if that isn't an issue for you.

First ones in my mind when you use that criteria are also Saugatuck, Holland, Petoskey, and Torch Lake.

Saugatuck is the art capital of the lakeshore. Start there. The "lake" in that case is "Lake Michigan" though. When you say "motorboat sized at least" I get the feeling you're thinking inland lake, not mini-ocean. In that case, I'd look at Charlevoix (Lake Charlevoix) or Holland (Lake Mcatawa).

Can't believe I forgot Charevoix.
I can't think of any inland lake areas (away from Lake Michigan) that are considered "upscale", unless there are some in Northern Oakland County I'm not aware of.

Coloma is such a unique lil City. They have Lake Property on Paw Paw Lake, Little Paw Paw Lake, as well as more expensive homes on Lake Michigan along M63 North. It's known as Hagar Shores. Lake Michigan Beach.
There is an old threatre downtown, the 'Loma ' theatre. Banks, a large hardware store, a nice Dollar Store, a few antique shops. A subway Shop, & The Friendly Tavern, which has good food. Also Shingle Diggins, if u want a great lunch or dinner , or possibly just coffee & some dessert.
Grandpa's Cider Mill, Contessa Winery & the Chocolate Factory, out on Friday Road, east of the City. Many things to see & do for a small town.
Paw Paw Lake can provide a lot of summertime time fun for a family.
