Framed roof houses (meaning rafters) are no less or more dangerous than homes built with trusses! Trusses are manufactured with engineered specifics as far as span and load requirements. When installed correctly, they will hold just fine, even as a replacement for rafters. I have used them several times in projects that I have done.

Look terrible? Pretty much all houses are built with trusses now, and I've never heard that they perform any differently in a fire.

They look terrible on old houses because the slopes are different. They do not match the architectural style of the house. I think that the overhang is different as well.
There are serveral studies where they found that trusses collapse in a fire. I used to know why they failed, but I do not remember.
YEs most houses are built with trusses. Most houses are also built with mordern spongy lumber, flakeboard, 3/8 inch drywall that you can walk through, any many many other poor construction techniques and materials. Modern houses are basically garbage and are only buuilt to last 30-50 years. They do have some wonderful developments in technology and construciotn knowlege has advanced in many ways, but modern materials and mass production techniques result in basically garbage. Other than a few custom built homes, not one modern house will be worth keeping in 50 years.
