I grew up in Manistee and have been to Wellston many, many times. I don't know if I would call it a "town". It's more like a village and pretty much what you see along M-55 is what you get as far as businesses go. A couple gas stations, hardware/sporting goods stores, car wash, and a diner or two. Not the place to live if you're looking for entertainment but I would say the residents always have appeared friendly to me. It is also an economically depressed area. Always has been as long as I know.
