Moving to lansing...where is a good area?
Hi Everyone,
My boyfriend is in the Marines and they are moving him from Hawaii to Lansing, Michigan in January. We've been looking at areas to rent in but not sure what are th best areas. We have kids also and would like a place with decent schools. Oh, yeah the kids are 9 & 5.
We found a house we really like in Edgemont Park...is that a good area. We were also looking at East Lansing and Okemos.
Any suggestions would be great!
Thank you so much!

East Lansing and Okeymokey are pretty pricey but nice. Having the whole college atmosphere in the neighborhood would be nice though. If you settle in Lansing and since you've got kids, try and get them into the Waverly school district. Stay to the west of Waverly road and north of 496. Nice area, reasonably priced. They do have school of choice here, but I'm pretty sure that's only available the first part of the school year. Lots of decent areas but lots of bad ones too. Drive around on a saturday evening and see what kind of foot traffic you can find. Lots of hood rattish looking kids in the street could mean trouble. No one on a street could mean peace and quiet.
Sorry about having to come here from Hawaii - that really sucks. Big time. Went to Maui 8 years ago - came back to a snow storm that lasted a few days. Michigan's way of saying welcome home.
Any other questions, I'm always more than happy to talk n type. Just ask anyone around me... he he he...

Thank you so much for your response.
Leaving HI is a bit sad, but he said he's ready for a change...so we will see...lol.
Do you know anything about NW Lansing...Westbury at Delta River Rd to be exact?
We found a really cute house to rent, but since we are not able to see it until he actually moves to Michigan we are trying to find out as much as possible.
Thank you for any help!

It's a nice little neighborhood. Seems kinda separated from the rest of the city when you get back in there. The river stinks on warm summer nights though. Don't hear about the usual crime up in that location either. Just noise from the airport.
Good luck.

As far as neighborhoods go, the Westside neighborhood is one of the nicest overall. Not a lot of rentals there though. The eastside is good, especially the further north you go. It's consistently nice from Michigan Ave to Saginaw. That really depends on the specific street you are on though especially once you get south of Michigan Ave.
Lansing has some good magnet elementary schools. On the Eastside is the new Pattengill Elementary school, which I have heard good things about but my kids are still of elem age.

I grew up in the Edgemont Park area. This is a nice area with well kept homes.
It's pretty safe, close to shopping, and in the Waverly school district.

Id say okemos, or grand ledge. If you are planning to stay an dhave kids, i'd say okemos. Okemos has a very rich diversity!
I'd not recomend holt. The schools are not very good.

Bad parts of Lansing.
Hey everyone,
I decided to post this question within this post because it's kind of related. This is my first post on this forum, i've seen a lot of great information come out of here so i figured i'd ask away :-D.
What are some bad parts of lansing to avoid, i have been contemplating moving to the city due to a friend in the area and a job offer i have had. i am looking for a home, and found what appears to be a decent home on Donora st. is this a safe neighborhood? i dont have kids or anything like that, im younger, early 20's, (22 in feb), but I dont want my stuff jacked (I'm in IT industry, so i have lots of toys, lol)
thanks in advance for your reply!
