Default Best Colleges & Universities?? Any students here? Flor-did-ian here :D

I view some of the stats for Adrian and Ann Arbor MI on the City-Data city/state pages. I don't have any real specific destination in MI, sort of just looking for the best colleges. I was looking at Adrian because my boyfriend and I toyed with idea of moving up there since he can get benefits through Adrian college, as he is a military vet.

I'm 21 years old, working on finishing up my AA through my community college here in Florida. I've never seen snow, so the idea of winters in MI scare me, but I visited some of the areas just west of Detroit over summer and I thought that MI was beautiful.

Basically the type of area I'm looking for is a fairly decent sized city with great schools, variety of people, and job opporunity. I like the city, I like being near quaint downtown areas that have lots of cafes, restaurants, parks, things to do, etc. I don't necessarily like the idea of living in a neighborhood saturated with college kids (though I am one myself), I prefer to live in neighborhoods of working professionals and families.

My current community college is in Orlando and according to City-Data has 15,000 enrolled FT. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to assume this, but for some reason I'm correlating the amount of enrollees with the amount of opportunity that may or may not be available through a school. Anyways, my CC is rated one of the top in the state and even the country. I look for a school that offers the "college experience". I'm not looking to live in a dorm or join a sorority, but I do plan to try to get involved as much as possible as a student, through clubs and community. I would prefer a school that welcomes speakers, visitors, workshops, etc. on a frequent or regular basis. I look for resources through my school whether it's career oriented, community out reach, and additional resources. Extra curricular activities and some sort of health care assistance once I get to the University level would be nice too.

So, students, alumni...what are MI's best community colleges and universities??
Thanks!

I'm a student at the University of Michigan-one of the best in the state (alongside Mich State). I transferred from a community college. I'm not a sorority girl and I don't live in a dorm; my husband and I live in on the outskirts on town (Ann arbor/Saline area) and I commute. Downtown Ann Arbor offers the quaint, small-city experiance, but I wouldn't want to live there; I enjoy my quiet, secluded apartment away from the traffic and the bars and the riff-raff! It's a great school but it's not cheap; I'm piling up debt in student loans right now.

Ah- the Michigan snow. We got 85 inches last year. I like winters but my husband, who's from N Carolina (also a military vet) can't stand them.

What program are you looking to study? I guess that's the big question.

The amount of snow was atypical for Michigan, although some years are like that, most are not. It is cold though~real cold~crunch when you walk cold and ice cycles in your nose and lungs cold~crisp cold.
Michigan State and U of M are the two top schools in the state, although Ann Arbor rates the better "downtown" scene. (Even 35 years ago it was a cool place). Adrian is just one of many small schools, there are many others. Kalamazoo has Western Michigan and Kalamazoo College, both of which might be more affordable than Adrian or U of M. Keep looking!

bem629 is on a distinguished road
I loved Alma College! Very small, very friendly, awesome profs and great opportunities to live abroad! I also got into some top graduate schools out of Alma -- @ Tufts & Harvard. Highly recommended!
