I never noticed my accent until I went to Denver for a few months. Good news is, the accent goes away quickly. Now we are back in MI and I hear myself and my friends with the accent, lol. My husband is from CO and he has been living here for a few years now and he still doesn't have the accent.

An accent shouldn't change much, if at all, when you're more than about 10 or 12 when you move.

I've lived in 3 states other than Michigan, and 2 other countries. I spent ages 4-12 outside of Michigan and left permanently at age 38. My accent - Michigan but less nasal and rounder 'O' s.

My mother's side of the family hails from the deep south, so I understand what you're saying.

I reckon so........

Why is that "good news?"

My Michigan accent is one of the few direct links I have with my home state. I don't want to lose it.

You're not ashamed of being from Michigan are you?

A friend from MI was visiting and our waitress figured out her home state for the way she pronounced omelet. I guess ahmlet instead of ohmelet.
My kids have Ants, their friends have Aunts. Since they have pretty much grown here they switch back and forth between the two pronunciations easily. They would never refer to their MI aunts as anything but ants. They would never call their friends aunts, ants. I am pretty sure I have never said aunt
I'm from Grand Rapids and i don't think i have an accent... but people always ask me if i'm from chicago or something when i go to colorado!

While in Georgia, I was told by a former "Northerner" that she recognized my "Yankee accent"

I was told a couple of times that I had an accent when I visited California - one giveaway is using "pop"... instead of "soda"... I still don't hear my accent, but I'm certainly proud to have it!.

I can't wait to get back to Flint so I can buy some decent chinese food @ Canton, and a coney dog @ Starlight. The rest of the country thinks a freakin' chili dog is a coney dog.
