Default Moving to the Soo

We're tired of the desert. I have lived in many places, and I have lived in places with harsh winters. I like the cold and snow.
We are going to retire in Sault Ste. Marie. I have visited there 3 times, once in the winter. We don't care that there is little or no employment, because we will be living on retirement income. We like the fact that property values are low and affordable.
I have a new philosophy, and that is that 15 minutes in Sault Ste. Marie is better than the lifetime I have spent elsewhere.
See ya in about 18 months. We want to make a lot of new friends and meet a lot of new people.

Wow! Welcome to the forum, Michigan and the Soo! I lived in and graduated from school in the Soo and loved the area. Not a whole lot happening usually, but the people are real and what you see is what you get. Not a whole lot of BS. It is nice having the college... oops, University right there in town and a class or two here and there to keep the ol thinker tuned up is very nice option to have handy. The no need of income is, unfortunately, a good thing in the Soo. Never has been a hot bed of choice employment opportunities. I have lived all over, and the Soo is one of only two places I lived in the past that I would move back to without a seconds hesitation. The winters can be a bit long, and chilly, but overall not too horrible. The Summers more than make up for a long cold spell in wintertime. Enjoy, even though it sounds like you are already planning on doing that.

Alot of people on fixed incomes choose Michigan because of tax reasons and the UP because of COL especially real estate. I worked with impaired populations in Delta County and know of a man who ended up on a fixed income because of health reasons. He told his case worker in Philly he couldnt live on the amount of disability, the case worker suggested the UP.

My wife and I both graduated from LSSU and I kind of liked the place for a couple years. I would go back if I didnt have to work. Its an old town with alot of history and unique geography.
