You may want to try the older sections of Livonia that border Farmington Hills as well as sections of Livonia that border Redford.

Novi is not bad either...great family type of oriented place.

Berkley is a cute town near Royal Oak with decent, small, older homes...to me, it's great to live near a freeway such as I-696 to help you connect with other freeways in the area.

Be sure to find a good realtor that knows the areas.

For me, I'd avoid Warren, Southfield, Detroit proper, Roseville, Garden City, Redford...just not as good of quality of life IMHO and parts of these areas can be too close to 'the hood' for my personal taste.

I second that, I'd also avoid Warren!

I'd avoid M-59(Hall Rd.) or even north to 26 Mile Rd from 23 to I-94. From 23 south and everything east of 23 to the Michigan/Ohio border. This area is the Bermuda Triangle of Michigan!

Those areas are too far anyway for someone who is going to work in Farmington Hills, unless you want an hour or more commute (in non-rush hour).

wow, you guys lumped madison heights in with Roseville and Detroit?!?!?

Ever been here?

anyway as far as the Michigan Economy improving and the housing being cheap, the answer is no, and the bargain you get on a house in Michigan now os nothing compared tot he bargain the person you sell it to will get.

this ain't even close to over up here. you seriously may want to rent if you are set on moving here.

I'll rent you my big house in Madison Heights for $1200 or so a month.

Hmm, I didn't lump anything really. I was just trying to come up with places off the top of my head.

I've been to Madison Heights...Nice areas there and some cute, older homes But, that commute from Madison Heights to Farmington Hills would be killer at times on I-696, don't you think?

yes agreed, I was just sticking up for Madison heights.
It is a very reasonably priced suburb, my house is only 3 years old but I got lucky.

696 is to be avoided at all costs in rush hour

No disrespect, but define 'nice.'

I'd be careful about Pontiac. There's good and bad parts. You'd be okay if you were in Pontiac, near the Waterford border. But, honestly, it'd be a hell commute. You'd have to do something crazy like take M-59 to I-75 to I-696 to get to work in Farmington Hills...I mean, there's back roads, but they get super busy.

Also, wanted to mention Farmington near Farmington Hills LOL Nice town too
