The only apartment complex I would consider based on what you are used to would be the Battle Creek tower Battle Creek Tower Luxury Suites - High-Rise Residential Apartments
or Keystone Lake. Keystone Lake, Battle Creek Prestigious Rental Community Both places are a bit more pricey but give you a bit of a better crowd to be around. The tower has a doorman and a great lobby, so you have a bit of a big city feel to it. Keystone is more private and more apartment like, but very nice compared to the other offerings in the area. I wouldn't rent from any other complex in the city. You won't find much violence in either community, although the city of Battle Creek isn't as safe as AA.
Battle Creek is a blue collar city for the most part. There are plenty of police running around, and violence is most certainly around. It would be an adjustment coming from AA.
However, do not let people do the usual thing they do on this forum and send you out towards Kalamazoo. I've lived both places and if I had to choose, I would just pick the place that is closest to my employer.

Yeah I would choose the closest too.
Kalamazoo has many rough spots as well and actually from what I have been able to tell downtown Kalamazoo, the student ghetto and out toward the West side of town have looked seedier and seedier and a bit more downtrodden. Stay away from Stockbridge area, trust me on this one, and of course the notourious north side.

Oh as far as Battle Creek goes, I heard they are laying off FIFTY people from the newspaper.
They do have a nice newspaper, guess it isnt going to be as nice.
That is NOT a good economic sign.

Where are the safe areas in Battle Creek?
My biggest concern regards safety and crime.
What are the good areas of Battle Creek?
Is every area north of downtown BC a bad area?
What areas in Pennfield are safe?
What about Emmet Township, is it safe?
What are the best areas to live regarding low crime and safety in Battle Creek?

I lived in Battle Creek till 2003/4. I went to school in Ann Arbor. HUGE difference in all ways.
As a fairly quiet person whose sort of a homebody I liked Battle Creek ok. Lakeview area is fine.
You can buy a small house in one of the neighborhoods bounded by Riverside and Capital, south of Columbia for pretty cheap compared to A2. There may be some to rent too.

Battle Creek is not that bad... a lot of my family still lives there and the downtown is undergoing some positive renovations through new business owners and Kelloggs. Pennfield is a good small town choice They just got a new high school. If you want to go a bit bigger-town, try harper creek or lakeview but i would personally stay clear of central... not terrible, but not great. Compared to a lot of the rest of the country and A2 Battle Creek is cheap and you can get a lot for your money!
If not, try Marshall- wonderful small town, or a little bit bigger- Kalamazoo.
(I grew up in Pennfield from 1 month old until 23 years of age)

NOT the battle creek central school district, in my opinion.
No, every area north is not terrible. But definately go and see for yourself.
Pennfield is very safe. I lived in a neighborhood right before morgan road on M66 with sunset blvd, alvena ave., etc. and it was fine!!! I also lived out toward the country more by north pennfield elementary- not a neighborhood though- country roads, farms, fresh air, open space...
I would not live in emmett township personally.
low crime and safety in BC- pennfield, lakeview, harper creek.
please feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about BC!!!

There are no jobs anywhere right now.
But yeah, Marshall or Kalamazoo would be a step up at this point.

How so? Marshall has lost a bunch of employers in the past few years, and are quite happy to be the size they are for the rest of time. Kalamazoo isn't doing much better, and does not have an 85 million dollar expansion going on downtown.
No jobs are safe in any place. The downtown area of BC at least is going to expand, in fact the new casino has applications for I think around 2500 new jobs coming to the area, of all different kinds. Kellogg's is going to be bringing in new positions in the near future as well. I don't agree that Battle Creek is any worse off then the other areas mentioned, in fact it is taking steps in a more positive direction then those 2 are at this time.
