Need cheap transportation ASAP
We're in desperate need of a car for about $500, it just needs to run and drive good and preferably have an automatic transmission. Year, make, model, color, exterior condition, not really important. Miles per gallon not too important right now since it will be primarily driven in town (Battle Creek). The closer to Battle Creek the better, but we really need some transportation that will get us through winter since walking 5 miles to work isn't gonna be fun and since we recently moved, we don't know anyone locally. If anyone has anything please let us know, thanks!!

Call Instant Car Credit. You will not find a reliable used vehicle for $500.00.

I'll look into that, thanks. It's helpful to be optimistic... who knows what I'll find for $500 or in that price range... I have seen some cars.

You can get a nice bicycle for that amount of money.
For any car even remotely reliable and safe you will need $3500. UNder that, you better be handy and have some extra cash for parts.

Sometimes you can ask in wanteds or check on craigslist. I bought a 79 Olds a few years ago for $600 which was very clean, no dents but needed a paint job, and it ran very nice.

I've seen cars out here for less than $1000. If I had $3500 I'd go and buy a $3500 car. I can't afford much more than $500, there are beaters out there and I'd like to think that anyone who has a spare, and not so pretty but running/ driving car wouldn't mind some extra cash in their pocket. If you don't have a cheap car to sell, please don't post here. Not trying to sound rude, but I need something ASAP. Thanks for your help

I'm thinking she isn't really trying to be rude, but that she needs something to drive, and quick- I'm sure if she was able to get the credit, or had more than $500, she would probably be happy to follow the suggestions- I'm guessing that it's getting cold, quick- and she needs something to drive-quick.
Try Craigslist-they even have barters on there, if you have something you could barter for a cheap car-

I beg to differ... The past 2 cars I have purchased have been for $1000 or less, and both have proven more reliable hands down than my sister's $11K SUV. It is about finding the right car, inspecting it thoroughly, and taking care of it. My first I purchased was a 92 Honda Civic at 199K, owned for 2yrs. I put in about $500 in maintenance repairs and drove it from Lansing to Cleveland and back several times over. I sold it for $1000 with over 240K running strong. I then purchased my current beater, a 93 Toyota Tercel with 123K for $900. I have only owned it 11mths and it is now up to 148K and running strong. She's due for a tune up, but has otherwise been very loyal and faithful and has not needed any major repairs. However, my sister's 02 (?) SUV she has had for about 2 yrs has been in the shop and cost her more in repairs than any of my vehicles have for the past 5 yrs.
To the OP... it will be really, really hard for you to find a good beater in MI for that price because MI is mostly a truck state - meaning, a lot of those that drive a truck / SUV tend to pick up beaters to save themselves gas money, so beaters tend to go for a premium. You'll find your best deals out of state (both of mine purchased in Ohio), the problem comes with either getting to the car or having the ability to ensure the car is a safe and reliable purchase. Definitely look at craigslist!

My brother was told that he could sell his non running beater for scrap for $500. I hope that you can find something running for that price, but I do not know why anyone would not just sell it for scrap and eliminate the risk factor (i.e. getting sued for selling a car with defects) and the hassle of showing it etc.
Can you wait and save up more or borrow from a relative?
Sometimes you may get lucky and find someone who wants to get rid of a car and help someone out by giving them a good price. Look in the less populated areas, you probably have a better chance there. Be careful about the condition of the brakes and make sure that they are not leaking fluid.
Please let us know how it turns out if you find something that works out for you.
