Kayakers - favorite rivers? favorite wildlife story spotted from river?
Its all in the subject. I'd like to hear about kayaking in Michigan. Took a lesson once but didn't follow through.

Speaking of Kayaks, I am looking for a 2-person kayak. If anyone has one to get rid of please let me know. We are going to the U.P. for a week this July and want to go around pictured rocks.
Thats a good question. There are so many great rivers. I usually go down a river here in my town called the Shiawassee river. Its a great smallmouth, pike fishing river and always see deer either on shore or crossing the river, along with tons of other wildlife. I would say any river in this great state would be awesome to kayak.

Don't you sort of need to know where to go? Will the river stay big enough or will there be debris?

The Seney wildlife refuge. You can rent a canoe out of Curtis I think and do a half day or all day trip down the Fox river. This is the River Hemmingway was referencing when he wrote the Big two hearted. He used the name of the river in the eastern UP instead of the Fox because it made for a better title. I drove a bus in the UP and spotting wildlife became a hobby of mine and ive seen it all. When I do the Fox river canoe trip I always see lots of turtles basking in the sun, ducks, herons

Bryan - thanks for the tip. I googled Seney and looked at the mammal list - nice!
I am sort of hoping for more tips in the Norther LP. The UP is magic but I just can't get there very often.

The rivers I've kayaked for years are: Muskegon, Huron, Manistee, and the Kalamazoo. Manistee is by far the most remote, a host of wildlife..bears, elk, lots of nature. Have fun! Muskegon is also a very nice river, very wide in spots, also has very rural sections.

I'm looking at a map of Michigan Rivers from online but it doesn't name the short of short "X" of rivers in Montmorency, Alpena, Alcona counties. Just curious. Please keep comments coming. Anyone ever see any otters?

The Kalamazoo is really nice from M89 east of Fennville. Its a long paddle, 5 to 7 hours depending on how you paddle, and if you explore some of the swamp creeks. The take out is at New Richmond near 58th St just after the railroad bridge. There are some nice beaches to take a break in the first third of the trip, then it starts to get swampy and is harder to find a place to stop, although there are some sandbars to stop at. Very natural, just a few houses here and there.
Put in here:

Agree
The Ausable is awesome!!! The cool thing is, there are lots of small islands you can stop and rest, plus plenty of sandy banks to take a rest and check out the beauty.
