I'd also recommend renting a house. Check the real estate listings -- if the house has been on the market for a while -- call the owner and they'd probably be happy to talk to you about leasing options rather than continue to deal with the carrying costs.

You might be able to get a VERY nice house this way.

Default Also moving July '09

Thank you for this discussion-- My husband and I are also moving to the East Lansing area this July, but we'll be visiting, looking for apartments or houses to rent during the first week in June. My husband will be pursuing his PhD and I will be telecommuting to New York, so we're looking for a place with some home office space.

I'm finding Craigslist a bit frustrating. Any advice on the best ways to find houses for rent? Should we plan to drive around town looking for "for rent" signs?

Thanks for your help.

I need advice . I have to move to east lansing in July 2009 to start a new job at MSU. I am glad about the move as it is an advancement in my career and I heard living is cheaper in east lansing. I think even though the economic situation is bad, there is a lot that lansing has to offer.

I am a 30 y/o professional, married and we have a baby daughter . Im looking to rent an apartment for now. Im looking for a place that is quiet and safe , a bit of greenery would help . I was considering the neighbourhoods on the west of Harrison road and north of Towbridge road. ( marigold ave / lilac avenue/ daisy lane / arbor drive / palmer lane / narcissus drive ) . I have heard good reviews of Arbor forest apartments ( Off palmer lane) . I would appreciate any advice about the neighbourhood .

Thanks in advance
Okemos and Grand Ledge are both really great. But Okemos is the closest.

Pick up the local paper when you get into town. There are also several local newpapers. Lansing State Journal, Towne Courier. Tons of rentals in each.
