I had my first pasty last summer in St. Ignus
I told my wife to go to a pasty shop that actually had people eating there, but she said they are all the same.
It was not very good. I want to taste a good one, i know they must be good!

If you like snow, ice, cold, overcast skies, bugs, and poverty then come to the U.P. I live here so I know. We have 2 seasons. Winter and getting ready for winter. That said, Iron Mountain is considered the banana belt of the U.P. It is a pretty nice town. If you need larger town shopping go to Green Bay or Appleton. You will find real estate cheap compared to most places. Enjoy the summers because they are short. Coming in June you will be in the best weather. I am not trying to paint a bleak picture, just telling it like it is. How well you like it will depend a lot on what kind of person you are. Fast paced and exciting it ain't. If you like laid back, quiet, almost no crime,(save drunk driving), and can put up with the things in the first sentence, well then you might just find it to your liking. Good luck.

I didn't know there was any military left up there - why are you being stationed there? Where?

I love the UP in August, September and October. Other than that, too cold and too many biting bugs for me. I would like to try a Winter up there though. I especially like the Keewenaw country. They have the best roads in the state! All that county money compared to the rest of the state (per capita) and nobody driving on the roads. Great for motorcycle trips but watch out for the drunks.

You live in a very different UP than me.
I know many doctors, professors, business owners, and professionals who have turned down far higher paying jobs elsewhere to stay in the U.P. They love all the winter sports and snow. They love the beaches and lake in the summer, campfires alone on long stretches of beach or vast untrammeled forests. They love the thriving arts culture and restaurants in Marquette.
I guess it's all your outlook on the world. Sad that you have chosen to see such a wonderful gem as if it were nothing but coal.

Its not all that far from Iron Mountain to Marquette , however , its a world away. Iron Mountain has colder temps in winter , Marquette has More snow , lots more !. Marquette is the UPs " big city" .

Wow......thanx for all the comments and suggestions. Some are exciting and others are out right scary...lol. Let me answer the question of the military.....my husband is a recruiter....and they always have them in the biggest cities to the most remote places. It sounds pretty, but sounds like too much cold for me! Winter and getting ready for winter did sum it up for me.....that was cute. I'm just so use to the heat and can't get enough of it. We are currently in th mountains of North Carolina, and its the first Fall with the change of leaves that I have ever seen. Normally the leaves in Texas there are green today, on the ground in two days and budding again in two months. I believe that most people that live there, too because they love the weather or they would move, just like people that live in the south, they wouldn't stay if they did't enjoy the heat I guess. We do love hunting, hiking, fishing and so forth, so theres something positive.
We are still having a heck of a time looking for rentals. After, e-mailing 6 realtors only one got back in touch with me. No replies from the paper or the craigslist either.....it would be so much easier if we were closer to go up and look, but i think we can only manage a trip around spring break time. Hopefully, there will be some listings by then. People are telling us to buy, but why if theres a chance it won't sale before we move again?

I would move to the U.P in a second if I could! The shoreline of lake Superior is some of the most beautiful in the U.S!
So much to explore, and see.
Good luck!

That's great if you are a Doctor,Professor, of other professional. But if you are a regular working person my description is closer to reality. The majority of people here are too busy working 3 jobs to enjoy the beaches or thriving arts culture. They do enjoy the untrammeled forests when hunting deer trying to put some meat on the table.
You are right about the outlook on the world. If you are lucky enough to have a good income you can live pretty well here and all those things you described are true. But for most of us, that's not how it is.
