Default my pet peeve on this forum

Here's an example:

I'm moving to _________, Michigan for a job. Can anyone give me information?

And they typically get responses like:

"Don't move here, the economy sucks!" (um... they already have a job lined up...)

"That town sucks! You should commute from MY town, which is two hours away."

"Don't buy a house unless you plan on living here for 900 years!"

"I hope you realize that it snows in states that are north of Kentucky! Did you know that Michigan was north of Kentucky before you took the job?!?! Michigan is in the north!"

Or something to that effect.

This drives me nuts. If someone is moving here, please try to give reasonable, useful advice. If you can't, please don't give any.

You are right. That is how it is. I don't really know if it is worse here than all other ones but I know it is worse than some.

Obviously, when you ask those questions on a public forum full of people from all walks of life, you are going to get alot of opinions. Different education levels, ages, wisdom...People can be very defensive about their towns.

I suggest to go to a website that is filled with facts, not opinions, to do most of the research one may be looking for as far as stats and such. Then, come to the forum and post questions regarding those facts to get a feel for what the locals feel. Some of the people's responses can really make you wonder about the town they live in. Hopefully, those are not representative of that town!!

Along with 83's point, I'd add that people are very often not addressing the question being asked, which makes posting here and reading the replies a waste of time.

Yes, most every good natured posting turns into a brawl. I have noticed this on every states postings. Seems people on this forum, are sorta like the media. They really like talking about doom and gloom, and very few have good things to say. Its very hard to have a good post because then one bad reply, and its just like pouring gas on fire. The good things dissapear, and the bad junk just keeps going. Oh well, whatareyagonnado.

Although I think a lot (certainly not all, just a higher percentage than other forums because of the nature of this one) of people who post on these forums are in general the kind of people who get restless in a place and are always looking for somewhere new, I do think that the MI forum is more pessimistic and negative in general than a lot of the other forums. I try to keep my head up because I know it's not all bad here and it will be a while until I can leave anyway, but I think a lot of people in MI have been really beaten down by the bad economy. Michigan's economy has been in bad shape since the 70s, at least according to my parents - I think after a while that takes a toll on people. Those who have had gainful employment most of that time are less likely to feel the same negativity, as are the people who truly love what Michigan has to offer. But for those who have found it difficult to have steady, decent paying employment AND aren't the type of people who enjoy winter weather, I think eventually it wears on a lot of people.

And some are not posting on forums because, they are working.
