Default First Time Skiing, Crystal, Boyne Mnt or Boyne Highlands?

Greetings!

My husband wants to take our family on a ski vacation to Michigan. My husband knows how to ski, but it will be a first time for myself and my three children ages 4, 7 and 9. We live in a suburb of Chicago, so this will be quite a drive for us.

Does any one have any advice on which ski resort would be best for young children and me - a very wimpy, scaredy-cat type of mom?

I heard that Boyne Highlands is more gentler than Boyne Mountain. It is the furthest drive for us. Boyne Mountain would have a waterpark for the kids to enjoy. I really don't know that much about Crystal Mountain, but it would be the closest as far as driving goes.

Does anyone know how the beginner areas compare? It looks like Boyne has a larger area than Crystal Mountain. It also seems that Boyne highlands has a smaller chair lift called Camelot in the beginner area. Also, Boyne has tubing which Crystal Mountain does not.

Also, how many days should we plan on skiing? Would a three night stay be about right?

Would young children have fun cross country skiing or snoe shoeing or would they find that boring. I have done neither.

We come every summer up to Michigan and just love it! A winter ski vacation is all new to me. Please share any advice or insight.

Thank you much!
Michelle
