Smile Moving to Michigan

Hello everyone,

My husband and I are thinking of moving to Michigan. We are currently trying to decide between two places: Northville and Plymouth. Could you please tell me which one is a better place for us to move too. Your help is greatly appreciated.

tell us something about you. your price range. job locations. likes, dislikes. age, # of kids etc. both those areas are very nice, but slightly different.

We are looking at renting either condos or apartments. We prefer to live in a luxury apartment or condo, if you can recommend some apartments or condos, we would greatly appreciate it. My husband will be around Southfield and I will be at Ann Arbor. We don't have kids yet, and we like to go to nice restaurants and I love places to shop with a nice downtown. We are moving from Santa Monica, California. We would like a place where we can go out at night and enjoy the city. Thank you very much for your help

i can't give you any particular info on specific rentals. but maybe i can help you understand the area better. plynouth has a much smaller town feel. more of a family area. a lot of older homes. probably less rentals. northville is similar, but closer to novi and less small town feel. is there any reason you prefer these cities over others. may i suggest looking at places like brighton. i would think northville is closer to what your looking for than plymouth.

Take a look at Farmington Hills. Good access to highways in all directions. Nice old downtown, people care about it and keep it up. I'm not sure if they have condo's, it seems to be more of a single family home town.

We jus need something in between Southfield and Ann Arbor. I don't want to have to drive more than 25 miles to get to school. I will look into brighton definately. Which of the 2 places is safer plymouth or northville? We are in our late twenties, we just need a great neighborhood for young adults. Thanks again.

there both very nice and safe. most twenty somethings in michigan can't afford to live in these areas. with your requirements none of these areas are thriving downtown type urban area. im 25, if i were in you situation and i was choosing specifically between, plymouth and northville. id choose northville. look into brighton. it's safe, probably cheaper, further from detroit (don't know if that's good or bad for you) 20 min to aa, about 25-30 to southfield depending on traffic. farmington is ok, but might cause a long drive for you from aa.

Plymouth and Northville are two of the best towns in the area. You cannot go wrong with either one. Plymouth is not likely to have "luxury" apartments downtown. I cannot think of any and I go to Plymouth at least 20 times a year. It is an old town and very quaint. There are some condos recently built downtown where you might find a rental. Plymouth has great schools and fabulous events in the town all through the year. The high school is huge (bigger than my hometown was). Plymouth is also very close to Ann Arbor which is a great place to be close to.

Northville is an old and quaint town too, but much of it has been modernized. Thus, it is less quaint, but you may find more new luxury type apartments there. I went there for banking for a while until the bank failed, so I visited Northville pretty often (plus I grew up technically in Northville postal area - South Lyon Schools). Northville still has a lot of the quaint old fashioned town left, but a lot of it is replaced with modern or semi-modern buildings and businesses. Northville schools are extraordinary, and also very large.

Personally, between the two, I prefer Plymouth. We considered both and chose neither, but I sometimes regret not choosing Plymouth Some things abotu plymouth are better than some things about the place that we chose (Grosse Ile). I do not regret not choosing Northville (except maybe for some school issues. However if you are into modern more than old fashioned small town, then Northville may be a better choice for you.

By the way. For the Northvillians who check this thread, do any of you remember the name of the old fashioned ice cream parlor that was in the downtown (on the same street as Krogers and Burger Chef, but right int he downtown area)? I used to love that place but cannot remember the name. It has been gone for decades.

Probably equally safe. My brother and his wife have lived in Plymouth since their 20s (he is 40 now). They have loved it at every stage of their life.

You may find more activity in Plymouth and in nearby Ann Arbor. Northville is kind of slow and quiet.

Brighton is clean and safe, but not quaint. It is mostly strip malls and subdivisions.

You may want to look into Ann arbor. Execellent schools and lots of nice apartments.
