From Gitmo to Jackson? Other ideas?
Since the administration wants to close Guantanamo as soon as possible, maybe they could take over the recently closed Jackson prison, turn it into a federal penitentiary, and send the remaining Gitmo inmates here. I suspect the NIMBY crowd would be small, given the current economic circumstances.
I'm just brainstorming. What's your crazy idea for economic development that just might work?

I'm not that eager to re-open Jackson Prison to anyone but wealthy filmmakers and their parasites, but whatever works, man. Of course they could reserve a wing for the terrorists -- 2 birds, one stone. But I like Feinstein's idea about re-opening Alcatraz for lodging Al-Qaeda members. It just seems more secure than any place.

If the U.S. government is going too pay Michigan (paying rent, staff, food, cleaning, ect...) to take on this burden, then go for it

But Gitmo doesn't hold that many prisoners, even, does it? Maybe we should throw the doors open to all KINDS of federal prisoners.

Jackson's leaders are brain dead, there have been many opportunities to capitalize from that facility, now the DDA and city officials want prison signs removed from the highway (I-94) to stop the "stigma" of it being a prison town. My father lived there for years and I have a hard time seeing it continue to tumble into a poverty stricken place, nothing will change there until new leadership is appointed.

Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO) suggested moving everyone from Gitmo to Alcatraz since all the San Franciso-types are the ones who had the biggest problem with Gitmo in the first place, so let them have it.
