The difference , we have custom designed equipment to do the job right. Winter is wonderful here in da UP.

I saw a stat on the news the other night that we've had 17 consecutive days where the high temp never got over freezing, with most of those days being below 20; so it's like, why waste the salt.

OK, we've had two days of temps hovering near freezing, and for almost the first time this season we've had 2 straight days w/o snow, freezing rain or what have you. So what do I finally see this morning, driving to work without my parka, on a bone-dry road in actual sunshine?

A TRUCK SPREADING SALT ON THE ASPHALT.

WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THESE PEOPLE?

You always sound so supremely happy to be living where you're living! It makes me smile!

And this thread makes me realize...that I was right about one thing...pointless for it to be cold without snow...and if you are going to be somewhere that snows, itshould not be somewhere with accidental or sometime-ish snow that the authorities have no clue how to handle, much less the residents...might as well be dead in the middle of real amounts of it that people are use to dealing with...

That said, I am kind of glad I plan to leave the driving for the most part to the folks who know what they are doing up there...cause right now your weather sounds SERIOUS.

Everyone on the street you meet , has a smile. Last week , when we had our " January thaw " , in February. ( it got up to 40 for a few hours ) , people were actually wearing shorts , and I saw a few cars with the top down also. Its back to 20 today , lots more snow tonight and tomorrow predicted. The sun is quite intense this time of year however , we pray for sunny days , thats our beach escape.

And are you serious there are zero black people, hispanics...no minorities aside from native americans?

get out your map... the UP , is Upper Michigan. The land beyond the Big bridge , Lake Superior to the north , Lake Michigan to the south , Lake Huron to the east. We have 3 per cent of the Michigan population , and about half the land area.
We have some blacks , some Hispanics , ( very few ).... most white natives are from Finnish decent. The oldtimers are called " Finlanders " , still speak Finnish , and everyone has a northern European slang , and work ethic .

Ahhh...methinks its the finnish mixing with the indians that caused that streak of blonde here and there. lol.

The place has a physical description that SOUNDS like Finland...I can see why they would like it there...

Interesting the connections you find in each part of the U.S. to the roots in foreign lands and the history that made the place the way it is today...one country with several different worlds going on at once...

How did you end up there?
