How dangerous is Kalamazoo?
I'm thinking about going to a school in Kalamazoo, but wanted to know how dangerous is it? I've looked at the crime statistics and was kind of shocked since it is a smaller city. Location is pretty important to me so any advice or facts would be helpful, thanks in advance!

It's not really dangerous at all! There are only a few bad areas in town (Northside, Eastside), and if you stay away from those, you should be fine. Also, most of the crime isn't violent crime.

I've lived in Kalamazoo since the 50's and currently have a part time delivery job that takes me all over town. Never had any kind of a problem!
I don't care where you live or where you go. You have to be aware of your surroundings. Just like any other city of any size there are a few areas where I would avoid on a hot summer night. During the daytime...no problem!

When you say you are going to school...are you talking about one of the colleges (WMU/Kalamazoo College/Davenport) or something else? Generally Kalamazoo is ok, but there are pockets of the city where you don't want to live/hang out. As mentioned, north of downtown is definitely not where you want to be nor is the area near east campus of WMU (not as bad as north side but still have to be careful). Kalamazoo/Portage is really a nice area; lots to offer for a city that size.

I'd stay on the West/Northwest end of the city, where there are plenty of apartments off of Drake Rd. and KL Ave. Oshtemo Twp. (Just west of Kzoo) and Portage are also quite safe.

If you go to WMU and live on the west side of campus, it is more subburban and higher percentage of students, east of campus aka the student ghetto is still safe, just more bums and crackheads to put up with which some can be annoying.

My friend was shot in Kazoo two years ago by some hood neighbors, this would be east/near south side. I spent summers there as a kid, so I have a soft spot in my heart for dear ol' Kazoo.
