Shouldn't be anymore awkward in SC than anyplace else. Perhaps you could give it to your students straight, like how thousands of slaves came into the U.S. via Northern ports like New York and Boston. Also how back in the day it was more profitable to stop whaling and use ships to import human cargo, not the sugarcoated nonsense they teach our kids in school today that blames it all on the South and doesn't address the fact that the North proffited as well.

If you are looking at Greenville, look at Augusta, GA. They have Strom Thurmond lake, a whole lot of golf, including the Masters, cost of living is cheap, (it was the most underpriced market in america when the bubble started to burst) and they are building up everywhere. There is a decent arts scene, First Friday parties once a month down town, and yeah, the weather is nice, although pretty hot in the summer.

I think we're moving into the times where relocation is quickly going to not be the answer anymore.

If someone has delayed moving for whatever reason, now isn't the time for most to think about that unless you have a job already lined up before you move.

Well after I graduate from school with my Associates in Applied Science with a Certificate in Surgical Technology, I am moving my family to Arizona. There is going to be nothing really left in Michigan to try and stick it out for not until we at least get rid of our Governor.

I could see why it would be awkward. SC was the only state that had more slaves than slaveowners. Not to mention the fact that the South still pays homage to many "heroes" of the Confederacy. I graduated with a degree in History and considering the curriculum and the problems with a lot of the public school systems, I realized that offering an actual concise, accurate view of the US in the classroom is frowned upon.

Anyhow, I applied to a few graduate schools down south and out west, so hopefully I will end up in CO or NC. My fiancee and I really don't see ourselves staying anywhere in the midwest, and nor do we see ourselves coming back here for quite some time.

I recently ate at the best Persian restaurant in downtown Greenville. Forgot the name (too much wine that night?) but it was wonderful. I've also been to good Indian and Greek restaurants there. The downtown is beautiful.

You are ABSOLUTELY right! I advise anyone contemplating a move to anywhere in the country to obtain a job FIRST. I was fortunate in the offer that I received and then moved from Michigan to South Carolina. A friend of mine thought she was going to "follow in my footsteps" and ignored advice NOT to sell her home and quit her job BEFORE she picked up and moved down here. She was out of work for 4 MONTHS!

This is very good advice. I've done that twice before, in both cases I had people to stay with and some savings. But even in much better economic times and circumstances it still took me much longer than I thought it would to find work. It took six weeks to find work the first time when we moved to Texas, but six MONTHS when we moved back to Michigan.

Unless you are in a desperate situation where you don't have work or a home in the place you're leaving either, it just doesn't make sense to up and leave without a job lined up. I have learned from my mistake and would definitely never do it again...it's just too risky and you could easily go from a bad situation to one that's worse.

I actually have a job opportunity lined up in Augusta. I was planning on taking a trip down there to check the area out. After reading a little bit on the Augusta forum, a lot of people made it sound like the area is run down, but i'm sure there is some very nice areas too. How big is the actual downtown in Augusta?
