New film studios in Detroit / Pontiac
With the tax incentives and new film studios going up, I'm just curious whether you think Detroit is developing a legitimate, long-term film industry (not like Hollywood, but perhaps like Toronto) or if it's just a flash that will be trumped by better incentives from another state?
2 movies filmed locally before the incentives
25 movies filmed last year
50 scheduled to film this year

It very well may be a long-term thing. In the grand scheme of things though, I don't think it will make much difference. Michigan has got a lot of issues to deal with, and I can't understand why we decided that this was the way to start fixing things. Film is not going to replace the economic void in the area anytime soon.

Yeah...go somewhere else with your stupid movie studios and jobs. Michigan doesnt need you. We want one huge company that employs 100,000 people. All our eggs in one basket.

The days of one or two big company expansions to "save" Michigan are over. Most areas of the country that are growing are doing it by 1000's of small companies adding 5 - 10 people at a time.
What's amazing is that announcements come out like this:

..and not a word from most people on this forum and elsewhere. There have been multiple announcements like this of smaller companies adding a lot of jobs this past year, and not a peep.

Well, I beleive that if you build the studio's people will come. Michigan radio news this morning said they expect the new studio to create about 6000 jobs in pontiac. Still wouldn't live there, though.

It's not something to brush aside as nothing, but it will not save the struggling economy. For every job created now, 5 are lost. This trend has to be stopped, but how? This thing may just have to run its course like a fever.

Yes, this is called harassment. Get used to it if you continue to come back here.

Jennifer Granholm said some good things last night, and it really sounds like Michigan will be getting a whole lot of different industries, and I really like her "buy Michigan" thing
This economy is like a long line of falling dominos. Somewhere we have to hope there is that one domino spaced too far apart which stops the fall.
I'm so tired of bad news every day, when I hear things like this, it at least gives you some hope.

The thing is that it is not a Michigan thing any longer, and if there is not a national or world fix, Michigan can not hope to comeo out of this. It is no longer a "fix this state" thing.

Well, one up side of films shot in Michigan is it puts it in the public eye. Right now, the public perception of this state is mind bogglingly ignorant. Some will just use sites for generic props, but others will use Michigan for what it is. Not all of them can be a gritty view like Gran Torino or 8 Mile.
I mean, who didn't get a fuzzy place in their heart for Pittsburgh after seeing Wonder Boys?
