There's another place (and I'm sure many more) like that in Mid W Mi. wth one crossroad and a country store. It's called hoxyville, near Cadillac, Mesick, Harrietta, Boone, not quite sure which is closest. This was 50 years ago and when I visited the area in 2004 it was still the same.

I knew an old lady from there, she was in her 80s and always talking about Hoxyville.

Check out Village Commons in Lawton, MI. I lived there back in 2000 and my neighbor was in a similiar situation to yours. It was a nice place to live and recently they just remodeled it. Nice and small and safe,(there isn't even a traffic light in Lawton). There's a grocery store, churches, a nice park, library, all within walking distance. You'd probably have to go to Paw Paw for medical stuff but I see Van Buren County vans taking people around all the time.

It is interesting you mention that because it reminds me of who often settled in Michigan. Around WWII, many people from the South, whites and blacks, were settling in Detroit for the jobs because of the lack of economic opportunity in the South. Now many people are leaving Michigan, and some are going TO the South.

Interesting posts. This sort of illustrates the cultural divide however, between rich and poor people, that I think is exaggerated more so in the state of Michigan than anyplace else.
It is ok to not have money, times are tough. I don't like it though when a wave of folks paint people that actually do have jobs as something elitist or evil. Not everyone wants to get by with zero dollars, or in Michigan freeze during the winter.

Hey at least we wont have a lot of traffic here anymore...
I decided I want to stay in Michigan, heat affects me as much as cold. Other states always feel too crowded to me [they seriously do like Ohio and Indiana] and we do have the beautiful scenery here. I'm retired thought{disabled} so I know things are different for me, then people who have kids to support.

One thing I worry about all those Michiganders fleeing, other states arent doing that great. What if Michigan people think its far better ELSEWHERE and it's really NOT? I have friends nationwide, people I talk to on phone, Georgia is doing bad, South Carolina, other states. I guess if they get a job and go it's different but this whole country is going into depression not just Michigan.

I dont know I think the divide between rich and poor is growing, there is barely a middle class anymore. I lived in Illinois, and it seemed you were rich or you were poor and it was EVEN WORSE THERE. And in big cities this is far worse as well. I am glad some people are not suffering, dont hold it against them.

There's no middle class anywhere. I've been in CA and NM and it's not just MI & IL. Have and the Have-Nots with a big gap in between.
