There are many good cities near Fenton or close enough to have what your looking for. I'd say look around Hartland, maybe 15 minutes from Fenton exit off 23. Nice area good schools. Highland is another small city close enough to both Fenton and about 45min to and hour from the airport. A lot of houses to rent and Huron Valley has pretty good school. Fenton is or was growing. I'm not sure what the rental market is like, I'd guess for a home it might be out of your price range. Out of the two I mentioned I'd say Highland is the nicest for the cheapest. If you could afford a little more I'd rent ya my house. hahaha

We actually can afford a bit more than $800 but my husband wanted a low rent if we weren't going to buy a house right away. Now he's obsessed with purchasing before we get there so now I'm house-hunting instead of apartment hunting. For that, we're looking for at least 1500sq ft, 3 bdrms, 1.5 or more bathrooms (with four in the house and me being the only girl its kinda necessary to have two). We've been preapproved for a larger amount than I want to spend so we're looking for a $150,000 house or less.
I've had to kick my husband off the computer so he'd stop looking on ebay cause hes pulling up these $2000 homes that look like they'd fall over in a big wind "but we could fix it up!" he says. He's the carpenter but its just a hobby and he's NOT home very much to do anything like repair work.
I'm pretty happy with looking around Fenton for a house, it seems far enough away from the larger cities.
Anyone have any idea if there are farmer's markets?

Have you ever been to this area of MI? Where is your husbands job at or is it in Fenton? If you have not been to the area if I were you I would rent for a little and then buy. This way you are not stuck in an area you don't like. I have never been to this area but most of my life lived in Oakland County. There are some parts I like better then others and also if you want kids that should be something you think of too. Schools vary greatly in MI. I am not sure of Farmers markets in Fenton but in the spring/summer there are ones that open around. I think there are a few indoor ones in the area as well that are open all year. Have you looked on craigslist at all or called a realtor company? There are a lot of homes for sale in MI and you could get a very good deal but if you are unhappy to sell it and move is going to be a battle

I've lived in downtown Fenton for over 10 years and love it. I moved here in 96, and was in highschool when I got here. The schools are very nice and has wonderful teachers. It has been one of the fastest growing cities in Michigan for years now. When I moved here the population in Fenton was 8,000 and now it's over doubled in 10 years. After moving out of my parents house I purchase my own house in the city. It has nice resturants, convenient shopping, and very friendly and polite people. My wife is from Pinckney, MI, another small Michigan city and she loves Fenton also. Linden is much smaller and further off the expressway, but also nice. I would recommend Fenton to anyone weather they be single or with family. Hope this helps. P.S if you are looking to rent try Georgetown Apts. they are very large and nice. Around the $600 to $700 range, and they do have 3 bedrooms in the 1500sq ft. range. I have 3 brothers and sisters that live in Georgetown and they love it there. There are also many affordable houses in Fenton right now. I live in a 1300 square ft. ranch not counting the finished basement, and I pay just over $800 per month on my mortgage. You could get more for your money than I got, because I bought in 2005 when the economy wasn't so bad. Many great deals in Fenton. It also is very centrally located. 2 mins from U.S 23, 10 mins from I75, and 15 mins from I69. It is 45 mins to Detroit, 15 mins to Flint, and 30 mins from Ann Arbor, and a little over an hour from Lansing. Yes there is a farmers market every other Thursday downtown. Downtown is called Dibbleville by the locals and is a very nice little part of the town. It has nice holiday events also, great fireworks on the 4th of july with parade and a couple other parades every year. If I had to pick one thing about Fenton I didn't like it would be the taxes about $3000 a year, and Linden is even higher at about $3500 a year. There are also nice walking paths through the city and parks, that go right by the farmers market.

All the responses are great.
Daniella: My husband's job is fluid as far as location. He will be based in Detroit but he is officially a work-at-home postition so we have some location flexibility. I have never been in Michigan at all but my husband fell in love with it on his job travels. We are planning a trip out there later this year to house-hunt so I will get a chance to look around a little before we actually move.
I think I've convinced him I won't buy a home without a thorough check into everything about it, including schools and neighborhoods. If we don't find "our home" on our trip we'll rent something until we find what we want. But so far, honestly, it feels like Fenton is pulling me that way. I've even found a house on multiple sites. Same house that keeps popping up and still on the market after three months. I'm hoping that one works out. I don't even mind the $3k a year for taxes, with the price of the house compared to the price we pay now in renting in SoCal we'd still be saving money.

Fenton is a nice place to live. It has grown a lot in the past ten years. They have done some new road construction down there that has seemed to help. Options for $800/mo. may be hard, but they are out there. There are some rental homes and if you're interested in buying you will find lots of foreclosed homes and other homes for sale as many people have had to leave their homes or leave Michigan altogether because of the economy. Fenton is a good trip down 23 from Flint, so you won't feel like you're on top of Flint. Grand Blanc is nice too, but closed to Flint.....but you may want to look there. School wise I have heard that there is Fenton schools and Lake Fenton schools....one is worth sending your kids too and the other isn't. I think it's the Lake Fention that has a worse rap. This is just what I heard so don't hold me to it. The one thing you will love about Fenton is being in and around the water, it is beautiful, but a lot of house block it, so look for nice parks.
Don't be afraid of Flint. I actually live in a small neighborhood in Flint and we have great neighbors. It's not all great, and the area has declined, but once you get here, you'll learn what parts to drive thru and what to avoid. You'll find an abundance of shopping for Walmart type stores. There are great restaurants, good theaters...drive in theaters in the summer. Miller road has our big mall, Genesee Valley (though I never shop there) and Center Rd. & Court has our small mall Courtland Center. Most people I know live in Fenton and only make occasional trips to Flint, like once a week at most, but Flint isn't soooo bad. Just a city being hit really hard with this economy. I hope you find what you're looking for.....Message me if you need anything else.
