Saw Magnificent Lake Michigan in Winter Yesterday
I've been to Lake Michigan hundreds of times, but never once in the winter. The only word that comes to mind is...SURREAL.
We went to Westside park south of Saugatuck.
Ice mountains and cliffs, like waves that froze in mid-air. The sand had frozen into a moonscape. I hiked towards the huge ice mountains and stood there, above the water. There were fissures and crevasses with deep snow between. With no one in sight but my husband sitting in the car, I felt kind of uneasy all of a sudden...looking at that ice cold, churning blue water 15 feet below me!! I quickly got back down.
Wish I could show you pictures but it wouldn't have been the same feeling you get when you stand on an ice mountain. Michigan is spectacular, isn't it?

Heehee!! ~Hi Moldman..sorry, I always feel that pics just don't do justice to the 'being there'...but, check out those great pictures people posted of Ludington in the 'Spectacular Michigan' photography thread, and that is kind of what I experienced...only the mounds were much bigger and ragged and weird shaped like real mountains. I just couldn't believe my eyes, I'm still in awe of this state, Michigan. Just love it.
Wish I had brought my down parka and some hiking boots, it was quite a trek up those frozen waves to get to see the prize...Lake Michigan.
Love this state...

I truly believe that Michigan is one of the MOST UNDERRATED states in the country--even, at times, in winter.

I'm going on 39 years and I've never seen Lake Michigan in the winter.
I need to check it out.

I drive by at least a couple of times a week. It is something that changes from day to day. I'll see if I have any recent photos of my area of Lake Michigan from this winter.

Here are a few. Like PineHallGirl said. Pictures do the lake a huge injustice, you have to see it to appreciate it. The ice rising and falling with the wave action, the sounds, and even the way it smells; crisp and clean.

Well sure, Glad to do it! Thank you!... And I agree totally, I've been to other states out of bordom, and wanderlust. But, I ALWAYS return to my Michigan.
